Should You Be Using WordPress As a Website

“Should You Be Using WordPress As a Website” written by Mike Marko.

Are you thinking about using WordPress as a website?

Are you looking to create a website because you see the value of having a website?

That’s great, because you have the vision to know why having a website is important to promoting anything online.

Should You Be Using WordPress As a Website?

WordPress is pretty cool.  You can create powerful, professionally looking sites with WordPress without having to learn a ton of coding.  With some practice, you can create a website in a week (or even weekend) what normally would take someone a month or more to do from scratch.  Once you install WordPress on a server, there are a bunch of tools to help build and manage amazing websites.

WordPress works really good for certain types of sites like blogs, personal porfolios, and bruchure sites (for example).  These types of sites are really easy when you are using WordPress as a website platform.  They have well developed plug-ins to make it easy to also build membership sites, e-commerce sites, social networks, and other custom sites.

So what about you?

Should You Be Using WordPress As a Website

When Should You Be Using WordPress as a Website?

Although some claim that WordPress is overkill for super-simple websites: I disagree.  When I talk to clients, I tell them to think of a website like buying a house.  You don’t want to build a website that you’ll quickly outgrow.  Moving to a new platform can be done, but why bother when you can build up a website and have plenty of room to grow in the future.

When you start looking at complex sites, you’ll move into an area where you’ll have to do some coding to get WordPress to work the way you want.  Though there is a point of diminishing return: at some point you may have to do so much hacking and tweaking that it could have been better to build the site from scratch (and using JavaScript, and back-end website programming languages like Ruby or PHP).  This is rarely the case because there are so many themes to choose from with WordPress.

Most people using WordPress as a website platform run basic sites.  These basic sites have a few static pages, a blog (or news) section), and may have some common features like contact forms, newsletter sign up pages, and more.  These features are easily handled with WordPress plug-ins.  These plug-ins help you customize your site.

Therefore most likely you’ll have to activate at least a few plug-ins to get your site looking and working like you want.  In some cases you’ll have to do some template coding to do even more custom content.

Using Themes in WordPress

We have already briefly talked about themes in WordPress.

Themes make it easy to customize your website and make it look like it was done by a professional designer.  There are thousands and thousands of themes.  Many of them look amazing, well-supported, and there are designs for a wide range of typical web industries and trends.  This is why Influx Entrepreneur offers hundreds and hundreds of different, including premium, themes.

When you are using WordPress as a website platform, you will mostly likely begin customizing themes they either free or purchased from a theme developer.

Customizing Themes in WordPress

To properly customize a WordPress theme to the need, you will likely create a child theme.  Using child themes is the preferred method for customizing themes. This involves setting up a new folder in your themes folder, then you copy and paste any files from the main theme you want to customize into this new folder. This can include the main style.css file or one of the theme PHP files.

Now when you are getting into creating child themes and customizing your own themes, someone using WordPress as a website platform needs to start learning a little HTML, CSS and even some PHP. Fortunately this is not like building a website from scratch.  You only need to know a little bit of each of these languages in order to customize the theme.  While the themes, plugins, and WordPress itself do most of the work for you, a little coding goes a long way.

You can cheat in the department a little as well by using tools.  I use Microsoft Expression Web to help generate a lot of the code I need.  You can just create what you want in one window, and the code is automatically generated in another window.  Alternately you can drop in existing code into the one window, and then change the code in the other box using the easy to use user interface.

Final Words

You can learn these basic skills and create the WordPress website you are looking for.

Now that you understand how WordPress works, and the importance of using themes and plug-ins for customization, you are now ready to get started.  There is a natural tenancy for people to want to create their own site and have it hosted.

But installing and setting up WordPress can complicated and confusing.  You also have to keep updating the website whenever WordPress is updated.  Add on top of it all the “upsells” of having to buy the nicer themes and plugins.  That’s why it can be much easier (and cheaper) to use a marketing platform like Influx Entrepreneur.

Now that you have added your text into your blog like we covered in Episode 1 and how to add pictures in Episode 2, it is time to get ready to put the final touches on your blog by doing some SEO (Search Engine Optimization).  SEO is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s search results. How to Start a Blog – My WordPress Blog – Episode 1.

As we discussed previously in “How to Make Money Blogging” and “How to Start a Blog“, you need to use a blog to really get content out on the internet.  With this content you eventually create a brand for yourself, and develop followers.  It is to these followers that you can promote products to and potentially get sales.  But it all start with a blog.

Setting up the blog may take some effort, but once that is done, it is easy to create 1-3 blogs a day.  Creating at least one blog a day is key to building up the content you need to become recognized and followed.

If you do not have a blog yet, I highly recommend signing up for a blog with Influx Entrepreneur.  Their blog will give you the flexibility to create a very professional looking website, and they have an amazing 24/7 support team.  The first steps in how to start a blog using the Influx Entrepreneur WordPress is demonstrated in the video below.

The video shows that a great trick is to first create a text document that contains the raw form of you blog.  I create a lot of my blog posts using the voice to text feature on my iPhone.  This saves me a lot of time as I take advantage of the time I would otherwise be doing only driving.  Once you have the text (which is ideally, though not necessarily, 500-800 words) you can then copy and past it over to your WordPress blog.

After learning the first part of how to start a blog using WordPress, you are ready to start adding details to the blog to make it more appealing.  This is covered in another article (click here to got to Episode 2).

Like I mentioned earlier, we have over 50 blog sites as part of our blog network.  And from our experience, the Influx Entrepreneur blogging platform is superior in a lot of ways.  It has a lot of advantages such as

  • It is really inexpensive
  • You didn’t have to worry about maintaining the site,
  • It has a membership site so you could sell your own products,
  • It has capture pages,
  • It came with free themes already integrated into the platform,
  • It came with webinar software,
  • It ranked in Google a lot easier than hosting your own site,
  • It is self-hosted,
  • It had its own social media site integrated into the platform.

And there is a lot more advantages…

Normally a platform like this would cost $200 or more a month!  Luckily, that isn’t the case here.  To learn more about it click the button below.

How to Find the Best WordPress Hosting Service for Serious Bloggers” written by Mike Marko.

I love blogging.  There is a lot of power in both connecting with an audience, and also promoting whatever you want to a worldwide audience.

In a previous blog post, we talked about Free WordPress hosting.  Today we’ll be talking about how to find the best WordPress hosting service… especially if you are serious about blogging.

As part of our personal blog network, we have over fifty websites… some free, some WordPress based.  And with all these blogs we gained a lot of experience… both good and bad.

That is why I want to share some of those experiences with you to help you pick the best WordPress hosting service for you.

How to Select the Best WordPress Hosting Options

There are lots of things to consider when you are choosing from among the best WordPress hosting services.

One key factor in this list of web hosting sites is technical support. WordPress is a memory hungry site.  It requires a database and php. Common errors like “500 Internal error“, blank homepage, all posts deleted are some of the common issue which you will face with a bad hosting.  Trust me… you aren’t going to have a good day if you find all your posts were deleted.

I have also considered what all these hosting companies are offering in package. Is it enough for you to host a medium server site or do you need a high traffic site.  Do they have a limit in terms of bandwidth and can they handle occasional traffic spike.

One thing people often fair to consider is geographical location.  The Geographical location is very important for any server for two reasons: Speed and latency. If you are a creating a blog for great user-experience (which you should) then you need to consider where the servers are located.

What Are the Best WordPress Hosting for Bloggers

This isn’t a top 10 or top 100 list of WordPress hosting.  Instead I am going to talk about web-hosting companies I have experience with.  I will also try to share a hosting discount coupon if they have one… so you can save some money.

Best WordPress Hosting - Bluehost

Bluehost

Bluehost is from official WordPress hosting recommendation page, and they are a pretty good value for money. They are not the cheapest hosting and one year hosting plan costs $5.95/month.  They claim to have unlimited bandwidth and storage at this level, but what they don’t tell you is that this is not really the case because it is a shared hosting price.  But it will do the trick.  You can also install multiple WordPress blogs on the same hosting package. The great thing about Bluehost is, their servers are optimized for running WordPress blogs, and they will let you install WordPress within 4-5 minutes literally.

Check out Bluehost  (Discount added into the link)

Best WordPress Hosting - Hostgator

Hostgator

Hostgator is the closest alternative to Bluehost.  Hostgator offers almost all the features similar to Bluehost, but they don’t offer a free domain with the hosting. Hostgator offers 3 different packages in shared hosting, and if you are shopping for Hostagtor, pick the baby plan because it will let you host multiple Websites.  Hostgator shared hosting also offers quick CloudFare integration from cPanel, which adds another level of security.

Check out Hostgator (Discount added into the link)

Best WordPress Hosting - Dreamhost

Dreamhost

Dreamhost is a decent hosting platform that can get the job done.  They are not the number one choice, but they can get the job done.  They scaled their server with Nginx and the latest update for high traffic WordPress sites.  An interesting fact about Dreamhost is that they offer a custom cPanel instead of default one. Also, you can quickly upgrade from shared to VPS and dedicated… and that’s something which is very helpful for growing your WordPress blog. This is something that other webhosting services are missing.

Check out Dreamhost

So What’s the Best WordPress Hosting Service?

Well… in my opinion it’s none of the three.

Personally I don’t like the headache of managing a website.  You have to worry about updates, server down issues (which can last days), debugging, and a whole host of technical challenges.

The Alternative to the Typical “Best WordPress Hosting” Services

Instead of the usual three suspects, what if I told you there is a service that was priced to compete with these best WordPress hosting services?

Plus…

  • You didn’t have to worry about maintaining the site,
  • It has a membership site so you could sell your own products,
  • It has capture pages,
  • It came with free themes already integrated into the platform,
  • It came with webinar software,
  • It ranked in Google a lot easier than hosting your own site,
  • It is self hosted,
  • It had its own social media site integrated into the platform.

And a lot more… all for a very low price competitive with the other services?

A platform like this would normally cost $200 or more a month!  But that is not the case here at all.

It’s worth looking into, right?

Free WordPress Hosting – The Better Alternative

Free WordPress Hosting – The Better Alternative” written by Mike Marko.

WordPress hosting can be very cheap way of getting the job done, especially if you have modest requirements for your site. For a few bucks a month, you can get shared hosting with a reliable hosting provider.  This will serve you just fine in the early days of your website.

But maybe “cheap” isn’t good enough for you.  You could be a penny pinchers who wants their hosting, like the WordPress software, to cost nothing at all.

There are many providers who offer free hosing for your website. If you’re determined to get your own free WordPress hosting on your own site, read on to learn more.

Free Bootcamp Training Mini-Course

Does Free WordPress Hosting Make Sense For My Business?

Well, the answer to whether “free WordPress hosting” makes sense for your business… is “it depends”. If you only need a basic WordPress blog, and you’re not interested in a lot of customization and you don’t need to control over your ad space, then you may be better off going with the hosted WordPress.com service. It’s quick, easy, reliable and free.

But with all its convenience, WordPress.com is fairly restrictive in terms of how much control you have over your site. For example, in order to edit your theme’s CSS file you need to purchase an “upgrade”.  That upgrade will cost you $30 a year, which is not much cheaper than the most basic shared hosting plan.

If you want to have WordPress in its raw and fully-customizable state, but you don’t want to pay a cent  for the privilege, then free hosting might be the solution for you.

Free WordPress HostingFree WordPress Hosting – What to Expect From Your Provider

Let’s talk about what you can expect if you sign up with a free WordPress hosting provider.

Advertising

Most free hosting providers will incorporate advertising into their services in one way or another. This shouldn’t be a big surprise to you since they are still running a business and have to make money.

Some free hosting will also require you to leave an attribution link in the footer of your site, or even display a banner advert for the hosting company.

Limited Bandwidth and Platform Storage Space

How much storage space and bandwidth you get varies widely between free WordPress hosting providers.  But in general you are always going to get less storage space and bandwith than you would with a paid hosting plan. If you’re a casual blogger, this is probably not an important issue.  But if you are planning to generate significant website traffic then it definitely will be.

Aggressive Sales Tactics and Upsells

Almost all companies that offer free WordPress hosting give you a basic service for free, but then try very hard to upsell you to paid hosting or some other product or service. You will get inundated by emails trying to get you to buy a “better” package.

Limited Technical Support

Don’t expect premium technical support with free WordPress hosting service. A lot of respectable commercial hosting provider will have a customer support system in place, with a hotline that you can call whenever you get really stuck.

Don’t very much support from free WordPress hosting. If your site suddenly disappears, there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to get it back. And that can be scary. If you’re lucky, the hosting company may have a support forum where you can post questions, or a contact email address for questions (if they actually answer their emails). Some even have phone numbers.

But don’t expect that anyone will go out of their way to help you. With free WordPress hosting, support is a bonus, not a given.

And you will run into technical issues.  It is inevitable as the sun rising in the east.

Alternatives to Free WordPress HostingIs Free WordPress Hosting Worth the Negatives?

For over 9 out of 10 WordPress users, the answer is no. If you have any sort of ambition to build a stable website that is going to get decent-traffic, then free hosting is going to be a nightmare. With inexpensive entry-level shared hosting plans available, the risks and compromises involved with free hosting hardly seem worth the trouble.

What is the Alternative to Free WordPress Hosting?

Now let’s imagine if you could find a hosting company that gave you the flexibility that you needed to make your website look and feel like you wanted?

Imagine that they took care of all the technical challenges that come with hosting… just like WordPress.com.

…that you were able to control your ad space.

…that you would not have traffic challenges.

…that you could easily host webinars.

…that you could convert your website easily into a membership site to sell your own products.

…that it came integrated with its own social media site.

Most providers charge at least $100/month for this type of service.

But you could get it for almost no cost?
