How To Make A Marketing Funnel That Works | Digital Marketing Sales Funnel

“How To Make A Marketing Funnel That Works | Digital Marketing Sales Funnel” written by Mike Marko.

I get it… you’ve probably heard of digital marketing sales funnels from someone or from some ad…

and now you’re wondering how you can make your own online cash machine.

Let’s face it: the concept sounds really cool.  Now imagine if such a “unicorn” actually exits; an online series of pages and emails that actually give you sales on autopilot.

Yeah, right.

Ok… what if I told you these things actually do exist?  And that today I’m going to teach you how to make a marketing funnel that works.  If that peaked your interest, then let’s dive in.

How To Make A Marketing Funnel or Digital Marketing Sales Funnel

I’ve been building digital marketing sales funnels for years for both myself and clients, both for marketing funnel Cincinnati clients and for clients across the world.  And now I want to share my experience to help you with your marketing funnel.

So before we really dive into how to make a marketing funnel let’s first talk about…

What Is A Marketing Funnel

I get the question quite often, “what is a marketing funnel”.  The generic answer is that a marketing funnel is a marketing system.

A more detailed answer is a process where you convert traffic into leads, then leads into customers, and then often the marketing funnel converts customers into repeat buyers.

Digital marketing sales funnel have been around much longer than web marketing.  But with the introduction of websites and email it has made marketing funnels easier to build.

How To Make A Marketing Funnel or Digital Marketing Sales Funnel

Let’s Get To The Basics

The purpose of a tradition funnel is to collect stuff and make it easier to go into a “container”.  For example, and oil funnel is used to make it easier to pour oil into your car engine.  The same goes with email or marketing funnels… they make it easier to “collect” traffic (website visitors) and have them filtered into your internet marketing machine.

The idea of marketing funnels is derived from the classic marketing concept: AIDA… or in other words Attention, Interest, Desire, and Action.  These 4 elements describe how you build customer relationships.

Example Of A Digital Marketing Sales Funnel

I want to share an example of a digital marketing sales funnel… in fact one right above this section.  See that banner, “Free Bootcamp Training Mini-Course”  Well that’s the beginning of one of my digital marketing sales funnels.  I’m offering something for free: a mini-course.  This free giveaway is to encourage people to give me their name and email in exchange for some valuable information.

If you click the banner it will take you to a capture page.  The capture page is designed to collect your email (and often some other contact information like your name).

After you give your email you’ll be taken to a thank you page.  This thank you page can also be a sales page as well.  In parallel… you’ll start receiving a series of emails as part of the follow up sequence.

So as you can see, there are several parts to a digital marketing sales funnel.  Now that you have a better understanding of marketing funnels, let’s talk about how to make a marketing funnel.

How To Make A Marketing Funnel

Let’s take this step by step, starting with…

1. Identify Your Target Market

This is where you can make or break your entire digital marketing sales funnel. If you don’t know your niche and target audience really well then you could waste a lot of time and money.

Assuming you already have a product or service to sell, then you should take the time to describe your target audience.

Don’t rush this process… it literally will be a key factor in determining the success of your marketing funnel.

NOTE: Don’t focus on your present clients.  Instead focus on your target or desired clients.  This exercise is to help refine who you want to attract more of into your business.

2. Brainstorm The Pain Points

Now that you know your target audience, you need to take the time to brainstorm at least ten pain points that your target audience has.  Aim for twenty, but don’t allow yourself to do less than ten.

Pain points are things that actually both your target client and may even keep them up at night.  They are real concerns to the people you identified in step 1.

Don’t think about the solution to these pain points… Don’t write those down.  Focus exclusively on the pain points from the perspective of your potential client.

3. Pick The Top Three

Once you have your list, pick the top three pain points.

The guidelines for picking the top three are:

  • The most likely and biggest concerns for the target audience,
  • The concerns that you are best at solving,
  • The concerns that you want to solve in your business.

The best pain points have an element of all three guidelines.

Struggling Getting the Business Success You Deserve - yellow text 3

We now know our target audience and what keeps them up at night.  We have just gotten started with how to make a marketing funnel

I have an overview of the steps after this point in How to Build a Marketing Funnel That Works On Autopilot.

4. Make The Lead Magnet

The next step is to design the lead magnet.  There is a lot to designing an effective lead magnet.  To help you check out this article, Lead Magnet Ideas | How To Create A Lead Magnet.

When picking content to create the lead magnet make sure you pick things that help partly solve the top three pain points you previously identified: the point is to make something that actually has an impact in the person’s life.  If you don’t help at all with your lead magnet, then the rest of your campaign will have little or no effect.

My team with IM Consultant Services will help our clients create the lead magnet… making sure it looks very professional.

5. Build The Capture Page

After designing the lead magnet, you are ready to create the capture page.  There is a lot to consider in building a capture page.  You can learn more by checking out the article, The Key Tips To How To Make A Lead Capture Page.

This is an important step that we help our clients create.  If you want to build your own capture pages, we recommend using Clickfunnels.

6. Create The Thank You Page And/Or Sales Page

After someone opts into your capture page, where do you want to send them next?

The typical digital marketing sales funnel sends them to either a Thank You Page or a Sales Page.  A Thank You Page is just that… a page that thanks the person for giving their personal information and tells them to check their email for a free gift link, or something like that.  A Sales Page is pretty self explanatory as well: it sells your first product or service to the visitor.

If you do a Thank You page, I recommend having a short video of yourself… thanking the person for their information.  These videos should only be 30-60 seconds long.  Here is an example of a short script:

Thank you for showing interest in xyz.
Hi, I’m ____________. I’m a  _______________ (insert 15-30 sec elevator speech).  Look to your email in the next few minutes for a link to the information you asked for.  Over the course of the days coming, I’ll be sending you some more free information about xyz.  Click the link below to [schedule a free appointment with me to…]

From here you may have a series of upsells or downsells, trying to get the visitor to buy products and services from you.

7. Create The Email Marketing Series

Since typically only 2% of people that may be interested in your product may buy on the first exposure.  It usually takes 7 to 10 exposures to get the sale… that means you have to employ email marketing as part of your follow up strategy.

There is a lot to email marketing.  That’s why we typically work hand-in-hand with writing emails for their marketing funnels.  If you are looking to write your own, I recommend checking out Effective Sales Follow Up Email Strategy.  If you are looking for an inexpensive way to get your funnel started today, then check out this article.

8. The Power Of Content

The most critical ingredient in virtually ever digital marketing sales funnel is CONTENT.  It would be remiss of me to talk about “how to make a marketing funnel” if I didn’t cover this topic.

If you want to attract people to your website in the first place… you need CONTENT.  Blogging is a great example of this.

If you want to turn more prospects into leads… you need CONTENT.  This includes not only the lead magnet, but also sending blog posts, videos, etc. to help build a stronger relationship with potential customers.

As part of the Indoctrination part of the email series, I recommend a short Goodwill email series.  This Goodwill email series will take the visitor to your best blog posts, videos, white papers, downloads, etc, that are relevant to your target marketing and the lead magnet that you offered.  The idea is you want the visitor to click your links, and identify what topics they are interested in learning.  Don’t skimp on this content… make sure it’s your best.  And the greatest content has video that has you talking in it giving invaluable and relevant content that your visitor would love to learn to help make their life better or easier.

When we work with clients we have them select at least three pieces of goodwill content to include into the digital marketing sales funnel.

Final Thoughts On How to Make A Marketing Funnel

In this blog post we talked about how to make a marketing funnel.  Marketing funnels are great way to grow your business using the internet.  Using this blog post as a guide, you can capture your traffic as leads and convert those leads into sales (and that’s the ultimate point of leads, right?).

The key, though, is test everything and don’t take anyone’s word for it.  All traffic will respond differently to different offers.

Test… test… test…

But in general, if you follow the elements I talked about how to make a marketing funnel you’ll do much better overall.  This is the same framework we take our own clients through when we help them build their digital marketing sales funnel.

How To Build A Dynamic Marketing Funnel – Part 2

“How To Build A Dynamic Marketing Funnel – Part 2” written and video by Mike Marko.

Have you heard about online marketing funnels?

In an earlier article, I had talked about the first part of how to build a dynamic marketing funnel.  I had talked about capture pages, lead magnets, and the welcome email.  Today, I want to take it another step step further and talk about the thank you page, and the Goodwill Campaign.

Time to roll up our sleeves and get started.

How To Build a Dynamic Marketing Funnel

If you want to watch the video where I talk about how to build a dynamic marketing funnel then check out part 1 of this article.  We’re going to continue building upon this today.

How To Build A Dynamic Marketing Funnel

How to Build a Dynamic Marketing Funnel – Thank You Page

In the marketing funnel, often right after the capture page the marketer has the subscriber go straight to a sales page.  You’ve probably experienced it yourself.

The problem is…

It’s a cold and rather impersonal way to promote your products or services.  It’s almost like asking someone to marry you on the first date: you haven’t even really got a chance to learn about each other.

Marketing is very much the same thing… you need to introduce yourself first.  And that’s what the thank you page is all about.  You are giving the subscriber a chance to get to know you and not suddenly get defensive because you’re suddenly pitching them.

MLSP Review From A Non-Affiliate: Get The Facts on My Lead System Pro

Key Thank You Page Points

The key points to cover in a Thank You page are:

  • Say your name
  • Thank them for subscribing
  • Tell them to expect a link to their free gift in their email within the next few minutes
  • Give them a brief explanation WHY they should listen to you.  Why are you the one with the knowledge?  This is not a chance to tell them your resume… instead just hit the key points
  • Tell them what to expect going forward… like periodic emails about how to xyz (whatever your emails will be about)
  • You can tell them to make sure to whitelist your email
  • And then tell them what’s next… the introduction to the sales page.  That could be right after the video stops playing they are automatically redirected there, or they have to click a button or link.  Make sure you tell them what to do next.

The Thank You page video should only be 2-4 minutes long.  Keep it short.  People don’t have a long attention span to listen to you ramble on about who you are, etc.  They want to know what’s in it for them.

How To Build A Dynamic Marketing Funnel - goodwill campaign

How to Build a Dynamic Marketing Funnel – Goodwill Campaign

So in a previous blog post, we talked about how about 2% of people will buy on the first exposure to an offer (if they will buy).  You need about 7 exposures on average in order to get someone to buy if they are so inclined.

That’s why email is important… you bring them back to your offer.

But I don’t know about you, I rarely open my email.  I get SO MANY emails that I’m picky about which email I do open.

So how do I decide?

I pick email that

  • Are from friends
  • Are from clients
  • Are important personal notices that grab my attention
  • I know will have a great chance of immediately helping me right away with costing me anything

Does this sound familiar?  Chances are you are the same way.

So how do you get your email opened?  As a habit?

Dry Cleaners Analogy

Well I often use the analogy of a dry cleaner.  They will send you a coupon to entice you to bring your clothes in to have some clothes cleaned.  The deal will be worth the effort to go out of your daily routine.

You drop off your clothes… then a day or two later you come to pick them up.  At the point where you are picking up your clothes they give you another coupon to come back… which has enough of a discount to make it worth your while so you do come back.

What happens?  You end up going to the same dry cleaners four times in a row.  And… it takes at least three times of doing something to start forming a habit: they are making coming to their dry cleaners a new habit.

Apply the Concept to Email

If you apply the dry cleaner concept to email, the idea is you want to encourage people to open your email at least three times.  So how do you do that?

You do content marketing… give away tons of value.  With each email in the Goodwill series, you teach your subscriber something of value that will help them achieve their goals.  At the same time you show you’re an authority that can help, and help build your brand familiarity with them.

So what do you write about?

The Challenges List

Assuming you already know your target audience, you take the time to list out the top ten (at least) challenges that your subscriber will have that is related to what you can help solve.  For example, since I’m helping people with internet marketing my audience list of challenges may include:

Wasting money on ads that don’t work

  1. Have no website traffic
  2. Have traffic but they don’t buy
  3. They get leads that don’t buy
  4. They can’t sell high ticket items

etc.

List out at least ten items.

Then identify the top three challenges… and create content around the challenges.  Ideally you create video on the topic.  Video is great because it helps build trust because they get to know you.  The video should be between 5 to 15 minutes in length (no shorter because it has not enough value; no longer because otherwise few will have time to watch the whole video.

Goodwill Video Structure

The Goodwill video takes on the following general structure:

  1. Introduction (who you are)
  2. What the problem is
  3. Briefly the wrong way of solving the problem that the audience may be doing
  4. Why that doesn’t work
  5. Explain what they SHOULD be doing (give good value here)
  6. Wrap up with, “If you want to learn more about how to [whatever the topic is], click the link below.”

And the link takes them to the sales page.

Final Thoughts On How to Build A Dynamic Marketing Funnel – Part 2

Today we talked about the power of the Thank You page and the Goodwill Campaign.  When you create a dynamic marketing funnel that incorporates all of these elements, you’ll find that you’ll get a higher rate rate.  The key, though, is test everything and don’t take anyone’s word for it.  All traffic will respond differently to different lead capture page designs and lead magnets.

Test… test… test…

But in general, if you follow the elements I talked about above you’ll do much better overall.

“How To Build A Dynamic Marketing Funnel – Part 1” written and video by Mike Marko.

Have you heard about online marketing funnels?

I had talked about marketing funnels previously in another article.  I taught you a lot about what was involved in a basic marketing funnel.

Today, I want to take it one step further and not only talk about marketing funnels, but also how to make it dynamic so that you can further maximize your profits from your leads.

Time to roll up our sleeves and get started.

How To Build a Dynamic Marketing Funnel

In the following video I talk about how to build a dynamic marketing funnel that will help you get better results when you are marketing your business online.

So what are the elements of the funnel?

Let’s cover them in more detail.

How To Build A Dynamic Marketing Funnel - capture page

How to Build a Dynamic Marketing Funnel – The Capture Page

The lead capture page, or landing page, is where you collect contact information such as emails from people visiting your website.  It has been demonstrated that only 1 or 2% of people who are first exposed to your offer will buy if they will buy at all. That means you need to keep exposing people to your offer.

That’s why collecting emails from visitors is very important for marketing online.

That’s where the lead capture page comes in!

For more information on creating great capture pages check out my article, The Key Tips To How To Make A Lead Capture Page.

How to Build a Dynamic Marketing Funnel – The Lead Magnet

Lead magnets are irresistible bribes you you offer that give your visitors value in exchange for their contact information. The goal of the Lead Magnet is to maximize the number of targeted leads you are getting for an offer.

The best lead magnets are customized to the needs of your target audience.  For instance, if you know your target audience is struggling to get quality leads for their business then your lead magnet could be about “Discover the Key Tips To Ensuring You Get Quality Leads That Convert For Your Business.”  It speaks to the needs of that audience.

Lead magnets can come in the form of:

  1. Guide/Report.  This is a very common form of lead magnet.
  2. Cheat Sheet/Handout.  These work well, and have a different feel than a guide or report.  They are generally short (one page or so) and get right to the point.  These can also be checklists, blueprints, etc.
  3. Toolkit/Resource List.  This can be a great for the right target audience.  It may be worth doing split testing to see if this would work for your business.
  4. Video Training.  If you are comfortable, video training can be a great way to deliver the lead magnet.  I use this all the time, and have quick calls to action at the end to maybe have the subscriber do a desirable action.
  5. Software Download/Free Trial.  This is pretty common for companies promoting their software.
  6. Discount/Free Shipping.  I’ve done this for clients where you can offer a discount coupon for signing up to the email list.
  7. Assessment/Test.  This can make a powerful lead magnet if you have an assessment that the target audience wants and needs.  These assessments can be used to help flip the visitor into a sale depending on the results of the assessment.
  8. Sales Material.  This is great if you have online sales material, like a catalog, that you can send once they provide an email.

Note that the lead magnet should only be accessed by a link from within the welcome email (see below).  That way you reward people for entering a valid email.

How To Build A Dynamic Marketing Funnel - Welcome Email

How to Build a Dynamic Marketing Funnel – Welcome Email

Soon after the email is entered into the capture page, it is registered in the autoresponder (“AR”) and the welcome email is sent out.

The welcome email is a great way to introduce the subscriber to you, telling who you are and what to expect in the future.  It will also contain a link to the page containing the lead magnet if its a download file or a single video gift.

The lead magnet page should be pretty simple and straight forward, often just thanking them for subscribing and presenting the free gift.  Sometimes you can also include a call to action to have them click a link for more information, or just link to a contact us button.

Recommended Tool For Your Funnel

For people getting started, I recommend getting Clickfunnels to help build your marketing funnel. It’s easy to use and very effective at building a list.

I also recommend getting Aweber to link up to Clickfunnels as your autoresponder, especially for when you start.  Be sure to contact me if you want to build marketing funnels that are more complicated in nature and we can discuss appropriate tools.

Final Thoughts On How to Build A Dynamic Marketing Funnel – Part 1

When you create a dynamic marketing funnel that incorporates all of these elements, you’ll find that you’ll get a higher rate rate.  The key, though, is test everything and don’t take anyone’s word for it.  All traffic will respond differently to different lead capture page designs and lead magnets.

Test… test… test…

But in general, if you follow the elements I talked about above you’ll do much better overall.

How to Build a Marketing Funnel That Works On Autopilot

“How to Build a Marketing Funnel That Works On Autopilot” written by Mike Marko.

Have you heard of an automatic cash machine?

Maybe you heard of people making sales while they sleep, on vacation, etc… and wondered how exactly they did this?

I know when I first started marketing online, I heard all about these automatic sales but I didn’t understand how it happened, or how it works.  Why are these people making the automatic sales and not me?

That was… until I found out about the magic of marketing funnels.

That’s why today I want to tell you how to build a marketing funnel that will do what everyone is talking about.

Core Marketing Funnel

The core marketing funnel looks like the following illustration.

How to Build a Marketing Funnel

As we talked about in the video, the elements are as follows:

Capture Page: Visitors put in their email, and maybe other information like first name, etc, into a capture page.  This information is then collected and managed by an autoresponder.

Lead Magnet: A freebie given to help entice visitors to complete the capture page information.  The best way to give the lead magnet is by email in the form of a link to the gift… thus rewarding people only if they give a valid email.

Thank You Page: This is where you have a short video introducing yourself, what they can expect (like daily emails), and letting them know about the following video (sales video).

Sales Page: This is the page that tries to sell the product or service.

Checkout Page: If the visitor wants to buy the product, they click a button and they get taken to the checkout page where they can put in their credit card information.  This should be a secure page.

Follow Up Series

So what happens if the visitor don’t buy right away (and they probably won’t) then you need to send follow up emails.

How to Build a Marketing Funnel

So after the lead magnet is sent (in a welcome email) then the following day starts the rest of the following up campaign.

Goodwill Series: This series of emails have links to pages that teach your prospect something useful, and congruent to the reason why they signed up to your list in the first place.  You should do a minimum of three emails as part of your goodwill campaign.  I have done as many as twelve in some.  On the third (and later ones) you can include calls to action at the end to buy stuff… but don’t go over the top.  You want to focus primarily on giving lots of useful value/information.

Email Follow Up Series: These are the emails sent after the goodwill series is done, and you want to keep in touch with the prospect. Often people take 7 or 8 exposures before they buy.  Others may take months (or even years) before they are willing to buy from you.  It’s important to keep up with sending emails to prospects and help cultivate a list of avid followers.

Final Thoughts On How to Build a Marketing Funnel

Marketing funnels are powerful tools.  Today we covered an effective plan to help get your follower traffic where you ultimately want it to go.  If you want more information on building marketing funnels, then check out this article on How to Build a Dynamic Marketing Funnel.
