Instagram is a great platform for both personal and business uses… but it isn’t the most intuitive program for building up an account.  So let’s dive in and answer the question, “how to use Instagram effectively

Create and Optimize Your Profile

Customize your Instagram profile and make it look good. This will allow your potential followers to know who you are and give them a reason to follow you.

You can start by creating a unique Instagram name that can catch Instagram user’s attention. But…make sure it includes your business name which is easy to recognize.

Adding links to your blogs, websites or other social media pages will surely help. If users find you interesting, there is a higher chance that they might follow you.

Also try to keep up with the current trends. Sharing your thoughts or ideas in trending topics really affect the number of your followers.

Instagram is not simply a photo-sharing app. It also features a number of tools that you can use.

Your first step should be to create your Instagram account.  You can sign up for an Instagram account using either your email or through your Facebook account.

Introduce your business using the bio field provided in your profile. If your business already has a website, include the URL in the website field.

Whenever you have new products available, highlight them with your business Instagram account. You can use them as your profile picture for a while. The profile picture gets a lot of exposure, so people will see it on every post you make . That makes it a great way to get the new product noticed. Show it off!

Creative Photos

Make creative photos as much as possible by using great tools available. Use a professional cameras and be creative in editing the pictures. This will help draw attention to the products that you are offering. Promote your products the best way you can using the photos.

Size of Photos for Professional Quality

A good way to promote your products is to post a quality content. This means that your photo must be clear to everyone. Avoid posting blurred image. Having shoddy pictures might degrade the perceived value of your products, and will lose your professionalism points.

Use Instagram’s Editing Tools

Instagram offers editing tools that are ready and available while you are posting content to your account. The filters and editing tools are designed only for instagram and they will definitely improve the quality of your photos.

Just don’t over edit to the point of changing everything to the products. Remember less is better.

Apply The Right Filter To Your Product’s Photo

The image filter can help you promote your products on Instagram. It can make a good photo look even better. Using the right filters will help the picture look almost look natural. You don’t want to offer a product that looks unreal or different than how it looked in person.

Ok, let’s get started building your Instagram account for your business.

Setting Up Your Account

If you haven’t already, make sure you setup your account for building your business and getting targeted followers.  I cover the basics in these two articles:

Post Your Piece of First Content

For your first pieces of content, don’t overthink it.

Seriously.

The purpose of your first pieces of content is to just get something that is somewhat congruent to your business out there on Instagram.  You should be building up eventually to posting to instagram several times a week (ideally daily) so these first posts will quickly get lost in with all the other posts.

The safest first post will be either a professional picture of yourself, or even an image with a quote on it that is somewhat congruent with your niche.  For example, if you have business somewhat related to business or money it would be safe to post an image with a quote by Tony Robbins or Robert Kiyosaki (for example).

The image should be square if possible… ideally 1080 x 1080.

Don’t worry about description or hashtags or anything like that… remember this first post will get drowned out by all your other posts.  This is just to get the ball rolling.

What To Post For Your First Six Posts

Now over the course of the following few days come up with some more posts related to your business.  You should post a variety of posts that may include:

  • Professional picture of you,
  • 2-4 Images with quotes somewhat related to your niche (even motivational),
  • 1-3 Pictures related to your niche (for example for a dog grooming niche you may have pictures of different dogs),
  • Picture related to you or your profession (even a picture of your work space),
  • At most one picture relating to your product or service.

You can experiment some with hashtags and descriptions if you like; just don’t let it hold you up from posting your content.   You can get better at future content.

Instagram is a powerful way to promote your business or services online. What makes it more attractive is that people on Instagram are more active than any other social media platform, but there are a lot more Instagram benefits.

Setting up your Instagram account as a lead generating machine can be a bit tricky without the right guidance.  I know because we had to learn a lot of what it takes to master Instagram by paying mentors, courses, and trial and error.

Tip #1: Pick A Niche

The first step is to pick a niche for your Instagram account.

So why use niche for your Instagram account?  I like to use the analogy of a big superstore like Walmart vs. Autozone… if you were looking for specific information or parts for your car… which one would you choose?  Most likely you would choose Autozone because they would be more knowledgeable and would have the parts you are looking for.

Or if you were really interested in a raw food recipe would you look for a generic website on cooking or would you go looking for a raw food recipe website?  I think that answer is pretty obvious too.

I can go on and on with examples… the fact is that you will develop a stronger following if you use a more narrowly focused niche for your Instagram account than if you account is more broad.  With the recent updates to the Instagram account, you can now register a couple accounts on your phone and be able to bounce between them.  That means it is easier to manage multiple accounts that each focus on a specific niche.

At the time of writing this article, we have over twenty two different instagram accounts all focused on different niches.  Most businesses only need on Instagram account.

Tip #2: Choose Something to Promote

The next step is to choose something to… well sell.

The point of marketing online is to make money.  Now what you promote can be any number of things:

  • Professional services
  • Digital products
  • Physical products

If you don’t already have someone to promote, then I recommend starting off with digital products.  There are lots of digital products out there that you do not have to create, and can sell without having to worry about customer support, technical support, etc.

You can also choose physical products, but I recommend picking products where you don’t have to worry about inventory or shipping.  There are lots of affiliate products out there that you can promote.

The key is to make sure that what you promote is congruent with niche.

For example, if you have an Instagram account that focuses on Siamese cats, then it is best to sell cat related products and services.  If you start promoting something like… car parts, then you are not servicing your audience.

Tip #3: Narrow Down Your Target Audience

Talking about audience… the third and final thing to identify your target audience.

Getting to know your target audience is an important part of marketing.  Often the more narrow the focus the better.

This article talks about creating a target audience for a blog, but the process is identical for an Instagram account.

You may have taken the time to set up your Instagram account correctly as a lead generating machine, but you may not be getting many followers.

And as you know getting followers is the whole point to having an Instagram  account… that and getting leads to market to.

That’s why I want to share some of my tips for getting more Instagram followers.

Tip #1: Make Content People Want to Share

When you create content that people want to share, and they do, you extend the reach of your Instagram account.  Having some content designed specifically to be shared is part of a good strategy of getting more Instagram followers.

Now it won’t always work… it will be hit or miss, but it’s well worth the effort.

You should also take the time to brand your content by putting your website address or twitter handle somewhere on the image (I prefer to not make it too obvious, but there are different approaches to doing this).

Tip #2: Use Hashtags

Using hashtags can make a huge difference in getting more Instagram followers.  Just like in any other social media (and also for keywords in SEO) people use certain hashtags more frequently than others.  If you pick the right hashtags for your photos, then you are more likely to reach a bigger audience.

Here are the most current top 20 hashtags on Instagram (per Webstagram):

1. #love 932,581,857 posts
2. #instagood 493,403,717 posts
3. #photooftheday 358,637,041 posts
4. #tbt 348,739,926 posts
5. #cute 339,343,134 posts
6. #me 331,475,739 posts
7. #beautiful 326,315,516 posts
8. #happy 321,689,559 posts
9. #followme 320,106,207 posts
10. #follow 313,980,215 posts
11. #fashion 278,305,647 posts
12. #selfie 274,668,938 posts
13. #picoftheday 271,900,644 posts

I am sure that when you look over this list you are probably thinking that none of these apply to your brand or the niche you are targeting.

Its also important to use the CORRECT hashtag when you are working on getting more Instagram followers to be engaged with your content.  You can use these popular hashtags, but this won’t create a long-term engaged following you need to grow your customer base.

To find relevant hashtags, I love to use IconoSquare.  It will help you find different hashtags related to your particular niche.

For example, I did a search on the hashtag #hiking and came up with the following top 15 hashtags:

#hiking 11,232,675 photos
#hikingtrail 131,991 photos
#hikingadventures 408,406 photos
#hikingwithdogs 110,764 photos
#hikingday 29,155 photos
#hikingtrails 57,850 photos
#hikingbuddy 24,200 photos
#hikingdog 24,570 photos
#hikingboots 17,034 photos
#hikingworldwide 25,045 photos
#hikingtrip 32,223 photos
#hikingadventure 24,695 photos
#hikingbuddies 17,905 photos
#hikinglife 22,613 photos
#hikingshoes 13,158 photos

You should try to use as many as ten or even twelve hashtags on some of your posts.  Instagram is presently a lot more forgiving when using a lot of hashtags, unlike Twitter that you should aim to use a maximum of three.

Tip #3: Ask Questions

A great strategy to getting more Instagram followers is to ask questions.  This is a great strategy for any social media platform.

When you get people to comment on your Instagram posts it helps get others to interact and like a photo.  The more interaction, the more likely that others will jump in on wanting to like, comment and even share the post.

The buzz and excitement will also help encourage visitors to check out other posts you have.
