Your Guide on How to Make Money Blogging

“Your Guide on How to Make Money Blogging” written by Mike Marko.

Are you looking to make money online to make some extra cash?

Or maybe you want to learn how to make money blogging so you can replace your job?

I get it. Blogging is definitely the way to make money online. We make over 90% of our online income through our blog.

There are a lot of misconceptions about blogging that I want to clear up for you. That’s why I wanted to share this guide on how to make money blogging.

So let’s get started.

How to Make Money Blogging

Like I said, Bren and I make over 90% of our online income from our blog. But before we dive into how to make money blogging, I think it’s a good idea for you know who I am.

Who Am I To Talk About Blogging?

That’s a pretty good question. How to Make Money Blogging - how to make money online

Two years ago I would never had thought I would be teaching others “how to make money blogging”… in fact I didn’t even know what a blog was. Seriously! No clue!

Bren and I decided to start with a blog that was associated with an affiliate program. At the time I took a blind faith purchase and got started. Well… it wasn’t like I had to make a serious investment because it was only $25/month. But still it was kind’uv scary starting something I knew nothing about.

During the course of the past two years, we learned a LOT! I took a lot of courses on blogging, and how to promote blogs to get traffic. I was eager to learn as much as I could. In fact, I’m still learning… and I expect it will be a lifelong learning process as we strive to keep getting better and serve our readers better.
But that’s what it’s all about. Providing value to you.

So in the process of learning to blog over the past two years, we were able to get on the leaderboards for several affiliate programs. And that was all because of our blog. And our income keeps climbing.

OK, enough about me… I’m sure you’re anxious to learn about how to make money blogging. Let’s get started.

Lesson #1: Serve Your Audience First

how to make money blogging - guideThe number one thing to consider when learning how to make money blogging is that you need to be a teacher, a mentor, and/or an entertainer first. Provide as much value as you can.

The money will then follow.

If you focus on the money first, then it will be a lot more difficult to be successful. Service your audience and you will develop a devote following. Your blog is your “freebie” that is used to attract customers or clients.

Lesson #2: Own Your Ad Space

It is important that you control your own ad space on your blog because this is where most of the money is to be made.

When you use free blogs, most likely the ad space is used by the provider or the space has limited use for you. They are geared towards making money for the provider.

Even when you own your own blog you shouldn’t sell the ad space. Sure selling ad space is attractive because it is passive income, but you can often make three to ten times more (or more) using the same ad space to sell affiliate products, or your own products or services.

Lesson #3: Don’t Push for the Sale Right Away

how to make money blogging - guide - sale right awayDon’t ask for the sale right away in your blog.

You ask, “what does that mean?”

It means that instead of trying to push your visitors to buy your products upfront, you delay the sale.

This is similar to what I talked about in Lesson #1 where you want to provide lots of value. When someone joins your email list, give them value. Give a free gift like an audio, ebook, or a series of videos. On our blog we give away our free bootcamp so our visitor can register for our training series on how to make money online. After a couple of videos into the series, we start recommending affiliate products that they can purchase to achieve the same results we talk about.

Give value first, then much later ask for the sale.

Now don’t get this confused: some interpret this to be never ask for the sale. I know I made that mistake at first. You always want to inevitably ask for the sale. Just don’t ask for the sale right away.

Lesson #4: The Main Purpose of a Blog Is to Collect Emails

how to make money blogging - guide - collect emailsIn my opinion, the main purpose of a blog is to collect emails. Sure you have quality content to attract your visitors, but your ultimate goal is to ask for their email by having them opt into your newsletter or free gift (i.e. lead magnet).

If you don’t get their email during their first visit, there is a very small chance that they will ever return again. They will leave and never come back.

Once you have their email, you can keep asking them back to your blog so they can consume even more of your quality content. By doing that you earn their trust.

Lesson #5: Have a Mix of Products at Different Price Points

There are four different types of products you need to have to successfully make good money with your blog: lead magnet, funded proposal, reoccurring income, and big ticket items.

Lead Magnet: This is the free gift you give to have your visitor register on your email list (talked about in Lesson 3 & 4).

Funded Proposal: This takes the form of inexpensive products or services you sell to help pay for advertising and other overhead for the blog. This typically ranges from $7 to $50 in price. Not only does the funded proposal help pay for your overhead, but it also builds trust as the buyer (your visitor now becomes a buyer lead) gets used to making purchases from you. It is a psychology thing: that small purchase starts to build trust. Plus it helps get their credit card out in case you have an upsell ready to go.

Reoccuring Income: These products work much like your cable or internet bill: a monthly fee is paid to keep the service. In this case you offer your customer a chance to buy a service or product that requires them to pay a monthly fee. This fee may range from $25 to $150 per month. There is a lot of power in developing a large reoccurring income stream because you can be making money even when you don’t make any new sales.

Big Ticket Items: This is my favorite type of product. Big ticket items typically range from $500 to $5000 or more! I love big ticket items because it is actually much less work to sell one $1000 product than it is to sell 100 products worth $10. Plus you have a lot less effort needed to serve 100 customers than the one customer who bought the larger product.

In the end it is best to have a range of all four types of products offered through your blog. It will give you the ability to service a much larger audience.  Bren & I promote this system because it helps provide these products for me.

Lesson #6: Blog Consistently

Although I am advocate of publishing content daily, as long as you publish consistently you will help serve your visitors. Even if you only publish a blog monthly (and that is the least amount I suggest you post a blog) make sure it is the same time every month so your visitors know when to expect it.

The advantage of blogging daily or almost daily, is that Google will tend to favor it because you show to Google that your content is fresh is relevant. That will help you rank higher in search results. Also by blogging daily you create a LOT more content hitting a lot more keywords to help attract even more traffic to your content.

Lesson #7: Longer Blog Posts are Better

Do you know what works best for getting traffic to your blog? Creating longer content.

I wrote a blog post about how long should a blog post be, in which I recommend for your blog post should be 600 words bare minimum if you are blogging very regularly.

In one of his blog posts, SEO expert Niel Patel recommends that your blog post should be at least 1500 words, ideally 2000 words or more. My results also show that longer blog posts of 1500 words or more do have a better chance of ranking in the search engines.

The data does support that longer blog posts do get better rankings by search engines.

Lesson #8: Spend At Least As Much Time Promoting as Writing

how to make money blogging - guide - promoteJust writing your blog post isn’t enough. You need to promote it.

You should spend at LEAST as much time promoting a blog post as you do writing it. If you spend 7 hours a week writing blog posts, then you should spend at least 7 hours a week promoting them.

If you can’t spend that much time promoting your blog posts, then scale back on your writing so that you are spending at least the same amount time promoting as you write.

For tips on how to promote a blog post check out “3 Things to Do Right AFTER You’re Done Writing a Blog Post.

Free Bootcamp Training Mini-Course

Lesson #9: Optimize Your Time

Spend your time working on higher value activities.

What that means depends on your goal.

If your goal is to increase traffic then measure the number of visitors you get for each hour of effort. That means if you spend three hours writing and promoting a blog post that brings you 50 visitors, and you invest another five hours writing and promoting another blog post that brings you 250 visitors, you need to determine which effort best serves you. If you do the math for our example, you will see that the first blog post brings roughly 17 visitors per hour of effort while the second blog post brings you 50 visitors per hour of effort.

Know your numbers by recording your time spent and analyzing your Google analytics.

You may find that guest posting, especially early on, may be better use of your time than publishing content on your own blog because it’s still new. In that case you may try to publish 25% of your early content effort as a guest blogger. You still have to build up your blog, but this way you can start building up traffic to your own blog.

Now don’t get me wrong… you still need to create content for your blog. You have to build it in order for it to be a more efficient use of your time. You want your own organic traffic.

But when you start, your new blog carries little weight.

Lesson #10: You Are Slowing Down the Growth of Your Blog

how to make money blogging - guide - slowing down growthYour biggest contributor to slowing down progress for your blog is that you’re doing everything for your blog. You have to deal with technical issues (unless you use a blog system like this), read books and articles about your field, answer questions from readers, syndicate/market your blog posts… and the list goes on.

The more you think about it, the more you realize that you can’t do everything.

That’s where I take my queue from lean manufacturing processes. If a single machine is slowing down the work of others in the factory, then it can cost tons of money. A smart manufacturing manager will be willing to spend money to eliminate the bottlenecks. In most cases, eliminating the bottleneck is much cheaper than the cost of the actual bottleneck to production.

This is true of almost any process, including blogging. While we may not buy a new machine to help (though I did buy a new computer because my laptop was way too slow and out of date), we might purchase software, increase our internet speed, or hire a virtual assistant or programmer. Sure it may seem expensive at first glance, but the cost of the bottleneck is probably much greater than what you would spend fixing it.

Initially we did all the work ourselves, but as we started to produce a small amount of income we started adding tools and software to speed things up. We eventually hired virtual assistants to help with some of the mundane and routine tasks that weren’t worth our time to perform, but still had to be done.

Lesson #11: Sell Right Away

How many subscribers should you have before you start selling? 1,000? 5,000? More?

The answer is you should be selling from day one.  Your business needs the funds.

You want to be able to automate as much as possible, like we discussed earlier. Since you are effectively the bottle neck in your business you need to get as many tools (and a virtual assistant) as quickly as possible. Once you start making money, you can start to invest in these resources to further grow your business.

Now be careful not to make your blog into a huge commercial. You’ll push away your potential customers because nobody likes to be sold. Instead make the option to buy available, and remind them occasionally that you do have things available for purchase.

Lesson #12: Ignore Your Google Search Results

Don’t get me wrong. I am a firm advocate of SEO and getting found on Google. But when your blog is new, for the first six months to a year you should not spend a lot of time on SEO optimizing your blog.

Your blog is new. Google won’t really pay it much attention for the first three to six months. Do some very basic SEO and keyword research, but don’t spend a lot of time on it. Spend your time on other forms of marketing your blog. Eventually people will start finding your blog even without SEO optimized blog posts.

Just get to writing quality content.

You can always revisit old blog posts a year later and freshen them up, and SEO optimize them.

Lesson #13: Don’t Waste Your Time with Your Own Products

When you first start off, you will have NO CLUE what your customers want. They often don’t know what they want. So spending time and money developing products is a waste of your time.

There are plenty of affiliate products ready for you to promote to make money online.

Only once you have a firmly established blog and are making substantial money should you even think about making your own products. Right now, though, there is better use of your time.

Lesson #14: Learn, Do, Teach

make money blogging - guide - learn do teachThis really is the last but more important lesson. It ties back to the very first lesson where I talk about serving your audience.

You best serve your audience be always striving to learn new things. Keep expanding your mind and strive to be the best in your niche.

Practice what you learn, measure the results, and then teach them in your blog. Be sure to be open about your journey because your audience will appreciate your openness. By continually learning new things you will never run out of great content to create for your blog and your audience.

The Basics About How to Make Money Blogging

The Basics About How to Make Money Blogging” written by Mike Marko.

Bren and I have been blogging for a year and a half now, and our blog is really taking off in making us income. But it wasn’t always this good, so we want to teach you what worked for us so you can hopefully get to profit sooner than we did.

Are you ready?

Let’s dive in…

Before We Start Learning How to Make Money Blogging

Ok, before we really get started and I show you how to make money blogging, I want to lay it out for you. You will not get rich quick blogging. Far from it. It takes time to build up your blog before you start rolling in the dough. A year ago one of my mentors pointed out leaders in my niche had at LEAST 300 blog posts per website… and he told me that was our target before we started getting the traffic to make money online with our blog.

And you know what? He was right…. It was right around 300 blog posts that our website started ranking for tougher keywords and we started making good money from our blog. Unfortunately a lot of people don’t stick around long enough blogging before they start to really learn how to make money blogging. They get discouraged well before the money start flowing.

So you need to ask yourself, are you ready to put in the work to start making your blog profitable? Now remember that your content is evergreen… meaning that once you get your website it will continue to make money online for you even on posts years old. But you have to first build it and you’re following up.

If you don’t see yourself blogging regularly… making the decision to work on your website for an hour at night instead of watching TV, then this isn’t for you. But if you are serious about making money online then this is the BEST way to make long term income.

Let’s Start Blogging in 10 Minutes

Before you can actually start blogging, you need to get a blogging platform.  There are hundreds to choose from, but I prefer ready to go blogging platforms.  The reason is that you don’t have to worry about hosting, and all the technical challenges with hosting your own blog, but also you get the power of an established blogging platform working for you… which helps you rank on Google.

A blogging platform we recommend is the Kalatu Empower Network blogging system.

How It Started For Us

About two years ago Sam Crowley approached us about making money online with affiliate marketing.  At the time we had no clue “how to make money blogging” (I didn’t even really know what a blog was).

But we dove in anyway not sure what we were getting into.  Over the course of the first half a year or so we basically spun our wheels.  We didn’t really know what we were doing.  We knew some of the basics on how to make money online, but I didn’t apply myself initially because I didn’t really trust the idea of making money online.

Then in December of 2013 we met Hector Guerrero a couple days before New Year’s Eve.  I remember sitting in the hotel on our vacation in Miami Florida, talking to Hector for the first time.  For an hour he opened my eyes to what it really took to make money blogging.  We started our new blog a week later, http://brenandmike.influxentrepreneur.info.  We didn’t start making money right away, but as Hector told us, around the 300 page mark our online income started growing substantially.

Bren and I are now on a mission to help others learn how to make money blogging, and avoid the pitfalls we had the first year.

Blogging Basics

I am going to boil this down to some of the essentials.  There are entire books written on the subject, so I am not going to try and cover everything.  Instead I am going to focus on how to get started to make money blogging.

What Is A Blog

The word, blog, is short for “weblog”.  I guess an easy way of putting it is a blog is a website with the entries posted in reverse chronological order.  Although creating a blog used to require technical skills, today software programs have made blogging extremely easy.  You don’t have to have any technical skills.  The “Kalatu blogging system” we discussed earlier is a system that can be setup by clicking a few buttons.

Is it Easy to Start a Blog

Starting a blog is extremely easy.  And the Kalatu blogging system makes it even easier.

How Much Does It Cost to Blog?

There are many free services to start your blog, but I recommend against using them as your primary blog.  You don’t have control over the advertising space, plus the host can shut you down without noticed (remember, there is really no such thing as truly free).  Can you imagine having your blog shut down after blogging for 6 months?  That is why I recommend against free blogs.

how to make money blogging

How to Make Money Blogging

It is difficult for people initially to understand how to make money blogging because it is so much different than most things you have been exposed to.  I think one way of describing it is like your website is a highway and you have billboards (ads) on your site.  As visitors arrive on your site, read your content, and move along the billboard will catch their eye and hopefully they will take action and click on the ad (and maybe buy something).

The more content you have, the more traffic you get, and the more eyes that see your “billboards”.

There are several things you can write about and make money from online. The following is a list of potential ways to make money blogging.

Kalatu Empower Network Affiliate Product Sales

Promoting Kalatu is my favorite way to make money blogging.  In this case you are promoting the same blogging platform that you are using, so that instead of your blog costing you money, it actually pays you.  All you need to do is get the Kalatu blog and the Empower Network affiliate membership, and off you go.  They supply you with everything you need to start making money online.

Software Tools Affiliate Product Sales

When I talk about how to make money blogging, I also recommend promoting the tools that you are using to build your online blogging business.  For example, I use tools like Onlywire to help automate the process of social marketing and bookmarking our blog posts.  If you use video editing software, promote that software.  Almost all companies now have free affiliate programs that you can use to help make additional money.

Now it is really difficult to make a large income with these programs because the commissions are often low, but they do help build upon what you make from the Kalatu blog sales (and other Empower Network products).  Plus by doing this, you get an opportunity to sell solutions to people who are not interested in the main offer (the blog and Empower Network products).

Amazon.com Affiliate Product Sales

Along the idea of promoting the products you use, I also recommend promoting the Amazon products that go along with your blog posts.  For example, if you talk about a book like we did in the blog post, “Wild” Chery Strayled and Using Your Own Inner Silence, then you can promote a link to buy the book from Amazon.  Amazon affiliate membership is free.  You can do this with books, CD’s, clothes, smart phones, etc… almost anything you can buy on Amazon.com.

Now That You Know About How to Make Money Blogging

So now that you know the basics, it’s time to start blogging.  Get your Kalatu blogging system by clicking the link below.  Happy blogging!

How to Get On the First Page of Google – 6 Key Rules to Getting Found

“How to Get On the First Page of Google – 6 Key Rules to Getting Found” written by Mike Marko.

Do you want to learn how to get on the first page of Google?

There is a huge advantage to dominating search for keyword phrases.

I remember the days of having to use the yellow pages to find what you wanted.  Back then you named your company starting with A to get on the top of that “search”.  Eventually that graduated to AA, and then AAA.

Where are the yellow pages now?  I remember that last one I had was used to raise my monitor so that my monitor was more ergonomically setup (hmm… a possible topic for another blog post, but I digress).

Now it is all about Google.  But Google is like the wild, Wild West of search.  There is no using AAA in front of your company name to get found.

Or is there…

While the AAA trick no longer works, there are some basic ways to improve Google ranking.

How to Get On the First Page of Google

How to Get on the First Page of Google

What I’m going to show today only takes a couple hours work a day on average.  This time includes researching keywords, writing the blog post, and syndication.

Keep in mind that Bren and I make most of our online income with our blog, and I’m going to show you what we do.  It isn’t a fast way to build an online business, but a slow and sure way to build something that will last long term.

So roll up your sleeves… and let’s dig in.  I’m going to show you how to get higher on Google search.

Free Bootcamp Training Mini-Course

RULE #1 – Research for Low Competition Keywords

I get it.  You see a cool keyword phrase like, “make money from home”, and you think cha ching!  If you can rank for that keyword you can just sit on the beach and your biggest problem will be having enough suntan lotion.

Unfortunately it isn’t the easy.

You can bust your butt building backlinks, and then wait and wait and wait…. Only to find that you are maybe on page 19 of the search results if you’re even found!

So stop wasting your time (and probably money).

There are hundreds and hundreds of keyword phrases you can go after that are a lot easier to get.  When I do my keyword research I create a list of keywords then use the list of ideas for future blog posts.  I talk a lot about this technique in this blog post: How to Get More Leads with Keywords for Google.

How to Get On the First Page of Google

RULE #2 – Stop Stuffing to Improve Google Ranking!

There used to be a time where the Google ranking rules make it advantageous to “stuff” your keyword into your blog post as many times as you could.

So how to rank higher on google if you can’t keyword stuff?

First of all, write more naturally.  Would you enjoy reading a blog post where every second sentence has the keyword phrase?  I know I wouldn’t.

Well, Google knows this and will look for people trying to game SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

A good general rule of thumb is try to target having your keyword used roughly 1-3% of the total word count.  So if you have a 9 word keyword phrase like, “how to get on the first page of google” (yeah, I just slipped in my keyword phrase… LOL) then in a 900 word blog post I want to target having it a 9 to 27 times in the blog post.

Now that isn’t all that hard.  If you want to learn some techniques on how to insert keywords, even long ones like “how to get on the first page of google” (can’t help myself) then check out the blog post, How to Get Leads with Kalatu.

How to Get On the First Page of Google

RULE #3 – Write Good Stuff

Sure you can write just to improve Google ranking, but then chances are it will read like crap.

What’ the point of writing a blog post if no one wants to read it?  The main purpose of a blog is to collect emails… Yeah, it’s true.  I know I catch a lot of people by surprise by saying that.  But the concept here is that very few people buy on the first exposure to an offer.  It can take seven or more exposures before they buy… it may even take months.

So capturing their email is KEY.

And to get them to trust giving you their email you need to write compelling content.

If you create poor content, chances are your visitor will bounce off your site never to return.  What’s the point to perfect ranking if nobody stays around to give you their email?

And to make matters “worse” if Google sees a lot of people bouncing off your site, then your ranking will get penalized.  Basically, if you write poor content that nobody wants to read then you are wasting your time.

Take the time to write good content.

Write naturally, and then slip in the keywords to make it seem natural.

You also want to include at least one image in your blog posts.  Not only will it make reading your blog post easier (and more appealing) but it also helps with ranking in Google.

For more information on this topic check out, How to Keep Readers Engaged with Your Blog Posts and Reduce Website Bounce Rate.

RULE #4 –Know How to Rank Higher on Google with Meta

This is something that I find a lot of bloggers overlook.  The Meta Title, Meta Description, and Meta Keywords, are a pivotal part of knowing how to get on the first page of Google.

Now depending on the blogging platform, the Meta Title, Meta Description, and Meta Keywords can take on different names.  For instance, this blogging platform (Influx Entrepreneur) uses these exact descriptions.  Our other main blogging platform, Kalatu, calls them Share Title, Share Description, and uses the Tags to identify the Meta Keywords.

SIDE NOTE: As a general rule you should always make your Tags the same as your Meta Keywords.  That’s why it’s cool that on Kalatu you only have the tags field and not Meta Keyword field.

Your Meta Title does not have to be the same as your blog post title.  I will sometimes write it to grab people’s attention more in Google search, and then have a different title on your actual blog post (but still keeping things congruent).  Both your blog post title and your Meta Title should have your main keyword phrase in it.

The Meta Description is probably the most challenging part of the blog post for me to write.  This is like a piece of sales copy that people are going to see in Google search results, while at the same time you want to have the keyword mentioned twice.  I have at times spent twenty minutes on the Meta Description on blog posts that I want to be really competitive with.

The Meta Keywords is just a list of the keywords you are trying to improve google ranking for and get found.  List your main keyword phrase first.  I also list the author of the blog post (Mike Marko or Bren Koger) as the last keyword phrase… you want to be found for your blog posts, right?  Then I fill in the secondary keyword phrases in between.

How to Get On the First Page of Google - Syndication

RULE #5 – Tell The World

You aren’t done when you write the blog post.  You need to syndicate your blog post.  Tell the world.

I put out social bookmarks (often images with links back to the main blog post) on a lot of sites.  Not only does this create a bunch of backlinks (which Google likes), but it also helps the blog get found on the search engines built into these different platforms.  The list of sites we syndicate on include Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, etc.

Instead of going into detail here on how we do this, check out 3 Things to Do Right AFTER You’re Done Writing a Blog Post.

RULE #6 – Pick a Blogging Platform To Help You Improve Google Ranking

You can follow all of these techniques, but if you don’t have a good blogging system then you’ll be fighting an uphill battle.

Sure you can have a self-hosted blog website, but it is basically like having a rowboat in the middle of the ocean.  You have no support.  With a good blogging network, not only do you have a bunch of other websites helping you get traffic (and they will) but you also get a lot more SEO power from the performance of the platform as a whole.

Now I’m not a techie on the exact reasons WHY this works.  All I know is that from the 50+ blog sites we have, the Influx Entrepreneur and the Kalatu blogging platforms performed the best of all.  While Influx Entrepreneur has done an amazing job for us ranking in Google and capturing keyword phrases that are highly competitive, Kalatu was a HUGE surprise for me.  Empower Network outdid themselves on the their version of their blogging platform.

So what did we do?

We now blog on both platforms and watch as both compete for the same keyword phrases.  And let me tell you, it is an interesting competition.  I can’t say whether one is better than the other, but they outperform all the competition.

Kalatu and Influx Enterpreneur are the pillars of our blog network.  Together they give us the power to rank faster for keywords.  We are in the process of rewriting content from Influx and putting it on our Kalatu blog, and then linking blog posts back and forth between each other.

I don’t know what else to say other than look at the results.  Our influx blog post only has an advantage right now because we have a LOT more content on it, but our Kalatu blog will catch up.

So if you are serious about ranking in Google, I recommend getting both systems.

Recap on How to Get On the First Page of Google

Today we talked about six different rules you should follow to get ranked in Google.

  1. Research for Low Competition Keywords
  2. Stop Stuffing to Improve Google Ranking!
  3. Write Good Stuff
  4. Know How to Rank Higher on Google with Meta
  5. Tell The World
  6. Pick a Blogging Platform To Help You Improve Google Ranking

The key is to get into the routine of doing this regularly.  Blog daily (or at least every two days), and follow these rules.

There you go… I gave you the secret formula on how we get a lot of our blog posts to rank.

Now for the tougher keywords… well I’m going to leave that for the future.  It gets a LOT more complicated (and will cost you money).  But before you can even think of going after tougher keywords, you need to build a solid foundation of going after the easier keyword phrases.  We had about 200 blog posts before we even attempted going after tough keywords phrases… yeah I said that right.  And now that we have 400+ blog posts we are going after even tougher keyword phrases.

But it all starts with a solid foundation of blog posts that go after easier traffic.

Happy blogging!
