AN ENGINEER'S APPROACH TO MARKETING

Are You Looking for the Path to Success?

“Are You Looking for the Path to Success?” written by Bren Koger.

The reality is that you’re going to run into obstacles on your path to success.

Some may be self-inflicted and some may be out of your control.

Regardless of the cause of the obstacle, it’s always an opportunity for growth.

The Path to Success

It’s not the big “wins” that cause you to stretch yourself but those things that happen to you that feel like failure that are your greatest times of growth.

Pain gets our attention like nothing else.

When we win we tend to pat ourselves on the back and coast but when we feel the sting of defeat or rejection it’s the best time to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps and assess what went wrong, take responsibility and work hard to change anything that needs changing.

This is a huge opportunity and all it takes is the right mental attitude.

It’s Like A Workout

It’s kind of like bodybuilding.

When we want to get more tone or build stronger muscles we go to the gym and we work out. We lift heavier and heavier weights which causes some “damage” to the muscle fibers.

45131,xcitefun-body-builder-01

After your workout, your body repairs or replaces those damaged muscle fibers by fusing them together to form new and stronger muscle fibers that are increased in thickness and stronger.

Without the stress of the damaged fibers there would not be new tissue growth.

Adversity

It’s the same with adversity If we were constantly on a smooth and easy path we don’t have the incentive for growth we coast.

It’s the “damage” of failure or loss that gets our attention enough to make changes.

There are countless examples of successful people who have achieved their success not in spite of their challenges but because of them.

  • Bill gates first business failed.
  • Albert Einstein didn’t speak until he was four.
  • Jim Carey was homeless.
  • Steven Spielberg was rejected three times from film school.

All of these people didn’t allow failure to define them but used it as a springboard for great success.

Like building a muscle we are given as much success as we can handle by building strong tools to help us deal with the challenges that will come with success. Without these tools, we would not be able to handle all of the pressures of the degree of success we are intending.

Rejection or Failure Don’t Define You

Growth and change can be one of the hardest things you do in life. You have to decide it’s what you want and persevere.

Many are but few are called but few are chosen.

Don’t Give In To Fear

If you’re going through a challenge you will be afraid at times. Acknowledge it and greet it like a friend.

11406889_866900483382717_4442322502839130928_n

But then realize that you have a greatness inside you that is bigger and more powerful than any fear. Realize you are not alone and you wouldn’t be given these challenges if you were not equipped to handle them.

Move forward taking one step at a time and try not to think or plan too far out into the future. You will be helped and guided but it comes in the present moment. In times of panic, I find I want to overplan and feel more secure. It’s times like this when it seems counterintuitive to let go and surrender to what is happening.

Let go of the reins and realize you can only plan so far because each next step is dependent on the last one and in order to make the right decision you need to be in the present moment.

Your Support System

Have a great support system or mentor to help you through the rough spots. It should be someone who is knowledgeable and supportive. Be very selective about who you share things with.

Final Thoughts on the Path to Success

Be confident in your journey.

This will be a part of your amazing story and an inspiration to others.

There will be people in your life that will need to know how to overcome adversity to achieve the same level of success that you have now.

You will be an inspiration and a counselor to others in need.

Every time you overcome something difficult you develop the mental muscles and tools so that the next challenge is easier.

You were not called to live a life of ease but a life of greatness and inspiration to others and Its not always easy but it will definitely be worth it.

Living Better With 33 Random Acts of Kindness

“Living Better With 33 Random Acts of Kindness” written by Bren Koger.

Do you want to know how to live better?

We’ve all heard many times the importance of a good diet and exercise to live a more healthy life.

You can try to eat a good portion of unprocessed food, get to the gym almost every day and drink plenty of water but if you’re not practicing kindness you could be missing out on something that could potentially add years to your life.

Living Better With Random Acts of Kindness

Studies have shown that practicing acts of kindness release healthy hormones like dopamine and we get something called a “helpers high.”

Not only that, acts of kindness produce an emotional warmth which in turn release the hormone, oxytocin, in the brain and throughout the body. This lowers the blood pressure and protects the heart.

Research Shows

Researcher Stephen Post of Case Western Reserve University says that when we practice acts of kindness, physical health is significantly improved, we live longer, depression is reduced and we are financially better off.

Being kind to others makes us healthy, happy and wealthy so why not spread the love..

33 Random Acts of Kindness

If you’re not sure what to do here is my list of 33 random acts of kindness to bring about better health and more happiness in your life:

  1. Smile at everyone you pass. This simple gesture can turn a persons day around.
  2. Send someone a note to tell them how much you appreciate them. Make a list of 10 things and send it to them.
  3. Find ways to compliment others. Look for the good. It’s so easy to criticize, complain and gossip about what others are not doing. Turn it around and find ways to see the good in others. Let them know what you see.
  4. Pay for the person’s coffee, toll or drive-thru behind you.
  5. Let someone in your lane in traffic.
  6. Give away stuff.
  7. Give someone a hug.
  8. Put a sticky note with a heart on someone’s mirror or computer screen.
  9. Hold the elevator.
  10. Say “Thank You” a lot.
  11. Give up your seat to someone on the bus or subway.
  12. Say “Yes” when a store asks you to donate a dollar to a cause.
  13. Every night before you go to bed think of three things you are grateful for.
  14. Compliment a stranger.
  15. Share overheard compliments.
  16. Recognize the good in others.
  17. Say “Hi” to strangers.
  18. Tip generously.
  19. Buy the stuff the neighbor kids are selling.
  20. Drop quarters on the sidewalk for people to find.
  21. When people are gossiping about someone, be the person to chime in with something nice.
  22. When someone makes a meal that you love, ask for the recipe.
  23. Leave money in the vending machine.
  24. Pick up trash.
  25. Return a grocery cart.
  26. Buy flowers for the cashier at the grocery store.
  27. Introduce yourself to someone you always see around.
  28. Forgive yourself for any mistakes you’ve made.
  29. Hold the door open for someone.
  30. Don’t honk at cars or people.
  31. Call your mom just to tell her you love her.
  32. Hug someone you love like you mean it.
  33. When you hear that negative voice in your head, remember to leave yourself alone — you deserve kindness too!

Final Thoughts on Random Acts of Kindness

Tips on How to Manage Change In Your Life

“Tips on How to Manage Change In Your Life” written by Bren Koger.

When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves. ― Viktor Frankl

Are you struggling with how to manage change?  If you are, you’re not alone.

The one constant in life is change.

It’s the one thing that connects us all.

That’s why today I want to talk about how to manage change in your life.

How to Manage Change In Your Life

Everyone will at some point in their life get the call that will knock them off their feet. It could be your favorite gym closes down or something more significant in life like the loss of a job or the loss of a loved one.

The way we handle these changes in our life is a great indicator of your ability to live a long and successful life.

“It is not the strongest or the most intelligent who will survive but those who can best manage change.” ― Leon C. Megginson

In The Midst of Change

If you are in the midst of a significant change in your life and you are feeling tossed around by the emotional roller coaster here are a few things to keep in mind.

Adopt an attitude of gratitude

You might be asking yourself questions like “why is this happening to me?” It’s best to welcome change as an opportunity. Find the benefit somewhere in the change. There is always a seed of benefit and opportunity in any seeming setback.
Start by keeping a written record for 3 days. Every day, note 5 things, large or small, that you are grateful for. You will notice a more powerful attitude of gratitude growing

The Feeling of Being Alone

It’s normal to feel isolated during change. You may feel alone in what you are going through. It may seem like every other person in your life has it together.

We often think what we are facing is so unique that no one else can help or understand us.

But change is easier when you let other people in. Whatever the situation, there is always, someone who can help you adjust. Be selective about who you share your feelings with. Make sure they love and support you.

Faith & Trust

You are going to be afraid and doubt your abilities. Try as often as you can to change fearful thoughts to more empowering ones of faith and trust.

Pick a scripture verse that will help you when you are feeling doubt and fear creep in.

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7

Reconnect to your center by going into prayer/meditation as much as you can. Use it as your anchor. Think of your center as an anchor and you as a small boat. You don’t want to have too much rope so that you get to far from your center. Just wander out enough in your day to do what you need to do and then come back to your center through prayer.

Be Good To Yourself

It’s really important to be good to yourself during times of change.
Whether life has thrown you a change or you want to make a shift being good to yourself is an absolute must–don’t forget the S.E.E.D of all change.
Sleep
Eat Well
Exercise
Drink Water
This is a new chapter in your life with new friends and new skills. Look at it as an opportunity for growth.

Who you are today is the sum of all the changes you’ve experienced–the fun ones and the difficult ones—in your lifetime. You have access to tips and wisdom from others who have been there. And you will get through this time.

Key Tips On How to Get Centered from Anywhere

“Key Tips On How to Get Centered from Anywhere” written by Bren Koger.

Get Centered From Anywhere

The weather here in Cincinnati at certain times of the year can be a challenge. This area of the country is rated one of the top worst cities for allergy season.

It can leave you feeling drained

Combine that with getting stuck in traffic and a myriad of other things that can cause stress in the day and some days it can be a little overwhelming to be out and about.

We can’t control allergens in the air, traffic conditions or any of the stressors in our life but you can control how you choose to respond to them.

So what do you do when you can feel your vital energy being sapped and drained from uncontrollable external forces?

If you’re out in traffic or running errands you many not be in a place where you can close yourself off in a room and do a formal meditation here are a few quick simple ways you can stay grounded and centered from anywhere.

Tips to Stay Grounded From Anywhere

Breathe -Focusing on your breath by inhaling for three counts. Hold for three counts. Exhaling for three counts for a few rounds can do wonders in bringing you back to the present moment. In times of stress we tend to breath in shallow rapid breaths and this contributes to our feeling of anxiety. By consciously slowing the breath down we are sending vital oxygen and nutrient coursing through our bodies.

The Tony Robbins breathing exercise is mentioned in the book “Unlimited Power” and basically consists of breathing in the following ratio

Breath in for one count

hold for 4 counts

breath out for two counts

Set aside some time=

Set Aside Some Time for Later -If you are over analyzing a situation and you feel like your thoughts are in a loop. Tell yourself you will set some time to think about things. Later and then schedule some time with yourself where you can think about things and problem solve. Don’t allow the thoughts you are having run you. Take charge.

Get Grateful– Go over a list of 10 things you are grateful for
Science tells us that gratitude makes us healthier. Gratitude also adds to the bottom line – in very real ways. And the best news about gratitude is that it requires little time and you can practice it anywhere.

Try using “Hand Yoga“. Hand yoga is the act of stretching and tensing/relaxing the muscles in your hands. It may sound strange, but for some people it’s an excellent way to relieve stress – Spread your fingers and stretch out both hands as much as possible.

Hold this position for a few seconds, then release it.

Curl each finger individually into your palm, pushing gently with your thumb. Hold it, then release.

Flex your wrists and bend each knuckle individually to “shake out” the muscles and joints.

Recite a passage or mantra that is meaningful to you.
I love this verse from the bible. It immediately calms me.

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7

Stress is only a state of mind and any situation is temporary. By using these simple tools you will be able to calm yourself from anywhere.

Setting Boundaries For Your Worrisome Thoughts

“Setting Boundaries For Your Worrisome Thoughts” written by Bren Koger.

Have you ever had worrisome thoughts?

I’m sure you have… I get them often.  It’s human nature.  The trick is not to be controlled by those worrisome thoughts.

When the going gets tough it’s very easy to get into a pattern of thinking “what if this happens” or imagine the worst case scenario. This can be a vicious cycle because it saps the precious energy that you need to move through those rough times.

How to Manage Your Worrisome Thoughts

Worry leads to anxiety and poor health.

And then you find yourself worrying about worrying too much.

Is there a way out of this vicious cycle?

Awareness Is the First Step

Notice the worrisome thoughts coming in and don’t judge yourself harshly for having them. Life can deal some harsh blows so your thoughts are normal. Don’t try to judge or suppress the thought. Just postpone it until later. That way it’s not running the show.

I think of these thoughts like a toddler always wanting your attention. “Mommy, Mommy pay attention to me. look at me”……

Setting Boundaries For Your Worrisome Thoughts

it’s up to you to set healthy boundaries on your toddler thoughts. Let them know you love them and it’s not punishment or judgment but that you can’t give them your full attention 24/7. In order to give your worrisome toddler thoughts 100% of your undivided attention you have set aside some special time to spend with them.

Throughout the day journal the thoughts you worry about the most and you will see a pattern. This way you can tell which ones need the most attention.
Then Set aside about 30 minutes a day when you can take the time to sit with your thoughts (make sure it’s not too close to bedtime so that it keep you awake.)
The next step is to take a look at your list and ask yourself are these problems something I can work on.

Am I Taking Actions Steps Toward Resolving Them??

What small action steps can I take every day to solve this problem? It might mean stepping outside your comfort zone to make phone calls or reach out to people.

You might have worrisome thoughts that are out of your control. Something that involves someone else.
Ask yourself:

  • Is the thought helping them? How will worrying about it help them and how will it hurt them?
  • Is there a more positive, realistic way of looking at this situation?

Setting Boundaries For Your Worrisome Thoughts

Serenity Prayer

The serenity prayer has been a huge source of comfort to me at times.

Stay Focused On The Present

My next tip is to stay focused on the present.  When you are in a negative thought your breath becomes more shallow and your body tenses up. Pay attention to the way your body feels, the rhythm of your breathing, and as much as you possibly can bring your attention back to the present moment.

Using mindfulness meditation to stay focused on the present will it take some practice.

At first, you’ll probably find that your mind keeps wandering back to your worries. Be patient with yourself start out slow. Each time you draw your focus back to the present, you’re reinforcing a new mental muscle that will help you break free of the worry cycle.

Final Thoughts on Setting Boundaries For Your Worrisome Thoughts

Everyone experiences worrisome thoughts, everything from finances to health and relationships. What separates an anxious person from a calm one isn’t the content of their thoughts, it’s how they react to them.

How to Create a Business Plan and Mission Statement

“How to Create a Business Plan and Mission Statement” written by Bren Koger.

Are you looking to learn how to create a business plan?

When you have a business, having a solid business plan can literally help your business succeed.  We had some initial success with our online business, but things really took off once we learned how to create a business plan and applied it ourselves.

That’s why I want to help you and show you how to create a business plan for your own business.

How to Create a Business Plan and Mission Statement

When starting a business it’s prudent to have a business plan. It’s like a roadmap for your success. It’s like an outline a company intends to take to grow their business.

Start with The Mission Statement

Within this plan is a mission statement.

A sentence or two that defines the company’s goals, ethics, and culture.- the what and who of the company.

This can be a powerful tool or meaningless hype depending on your intent.

Some people consider it something to quickly get done and check off the list of things to do. However, a well-written mission statement can be a great tool for clarity and communication of your business goals. Not only for yourself and employees but customers and the community.

It’s like a written vision board for everyone to see.

Example Mission Statements

Here are a few examples of some of the best mission statements:

Amazon-To be Earth’s most customer-centric company where people can find and discover anything they want to buy online.”

Virgin-Our mission statement is simple, yet the foundation of everything we do here at Virgin Atlantic Airways… to embrace the human spirit and let it fly.”

Trader Joe’s-The mission of Trader Joe’s is to give our customers the best food and beverage values that they can find anywhere and to provide them with the information required to make informed buying decisions. We provide these with a dedication to the highest quality of customer satisfaction delivered with a sense of warmth, friendliness, fun, individual pride, and company spirit.”

Intel: Delight our customers, employees, and shareholders by relentlessly delivering the platform and technology advancements that become essential to the way we work and live.

All of these mission statements are short, memorable and we know why they are in business.

Take Your Time

Give yourself some time to write it. It should be clear and concise. Even though it will end up being a couple of sentences long you’re going to need to brainstorm and edit several times.

These Questions May Help

  • Start out with the following questions:
  • Why did we start this business?
  • Why are you in business?
  • What do you want to accomplish?
  • • Why will this bring value to people?
  • Who is your customer? Get very clear on who this is. In this video Mike, talks about how to define your target audience

[jwplayer player=”2″ mediaid=”20886″]

Advice from Richard Branson

Now take some advice from Richard Branson on crafting your mission statement

  • Brevity is certainly key, so try using Twitter’s 140-character template when you’re drafting your inspirational message.
  • You need to explain your company’s purpose-
  • outline expectations for internal and external clients alike.
  • Make it unique to your company
  • Make it memorable
  • Keep it real
  • Just for fun, imagine it on the bottom of a coat of arms.”

How to Create a Business Plan and Mission Statement

Here is my challenge to you if you haven’t written a mission statement yet write one that reflects your true passions and values, using the guidelines above write on that reflects the difference your business will make in the world.

Final Thoughts on How to Create a Business Plan

Powerful Positive Thinking Exercises That Help Get Results

“Powerful Positive Thinking Exercises That Help Get Results” written by Bren Koger.

Are you looking for some positive thinking exercises that really work?

Positive thinking can help you have huge success: at home, business, health, relationships, and pretty much all aspects of life.

In this article, I’m going to share my favorite positive thinking exercises.

Positive Thinking Exercises

I’ve had this posted on my office wall for many years now.

Powerful Positive Thinking Exercises That Help Get Results

I’m pretty sure it originally came from some Bob Proctor training that I took over ten years ago.

Having the ability to have a positive mental attitude is not just a self-help theory. There are actually studies being done on the impact of your thoughts on your success level in all areas of your life.

Impact of Positive Thinking Exercises

In one study by Barbara Fredrickson at the University of North Carolina Fredrickson tested the impact of positive emotions on the brain by setting up a little experiment.

During this experiment, she divided her research subjects into five groups and showed each group different film clips.

The first two groups were shown clips that created positive emotions. Group 1 saw images that created feelings of joy. Group 2 saw images that created feelings of contentment.

Group 3 was the control group. They saw images that were neutral and produced no significant emotion.
The last two groups were shown clips that created negative emotions. Group 4 saw images that created feelings of fear. Group 5 saw images that created feelings of anger.

Afterward, each participant was asked to imagine themselves in a situation where similar feelings would arise and to write down what they would do. Each participant was handed a piece of paper with 20 blank lines that started with the phrase, “I would like to…”

Participants who saw images of fear and anger wrote down the fewest responses. Meanwhile, the participants who saw images of joy and contentment, wrote down a significantly higher number of actions that they would take, even when compared to the neutral group.

You Get What You Focus On

In other words, when you are experiencing positive emotions like joy, contentment, and love, you will see more possibilities in your life. These findings were among the first that suggested positive emotions broaden your sense of possibility and open your mind up to more options..- James Clear

What Are Some Positive Thinking Exercises?

So how do we develop and maintain positive mental attitude to open up the possibilities; especially when times are tough.

Meditation– within minutes you can go from stress to complete clarity and peace.  If you are new to meditation, try this 10-minute guided meditation.

[jwplayer player=”2″ mediaid=”20874″]

Try a stress journal– For one week you write down all of the things in your life that cause you stress or make you feel fearful.

This includes thoughts about the past and projections about the future.

Look for patterns in your negative thinking. Are there certain thoughts you keep on thinking and certain times of the day its more intense. With this awareness, you can analyze the most damaging thoughts and you can write an affirmation that will help you pivot your thinking to a better feeling thought.

Positive Things

If you want to boost your ability to think a positive thought then every day make a list of all the positive things that have happened to you. Some days this will be easier than others, but if you really think about it how bad can it be when…

“Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names.”
“At least 80% of humanity lives on less than $10 a day.”
“Some 1.1 billion people in developing countries have inadequate access to water, and 2.6 billion lack basic sanitation.”
Source: globalissues.org

You can easily come up with a list of 10 things. People tend to have a negativity bias that we constantly need to keep in check.

So think over the last few hours or last night and think of ten cool things and write then down

You Inner Child

Get in touch with your inner child-Find something that you like to do and just play. I recently happened upon this really cool adult coloring book in the check out isle at Whole Foods. It really is relaxing to color these beautiful pictures. (if you have some perfection issues practice going outside the lines)

Powerful Positive Thinking Exercises That Help Get Results

Exercise– go to the gym, go for a run take a walk outside in nature.
Anything to get your body moving and the flow of oxygen to your brain and release endorphins throughout your body.

Final Thoughts on Positive Thinking Exercises

I can honestly say that all of the above have been really helpful for me in working through some of my life’s darker moments. I hope you also get some benefit from these. Please share your own positive thinking techniques below!

If this was helpful please leave a comment below.

Love and Light,

People Pleaser Personality

I’m a typical middle child in that I like to make peace and I’m somewhat of a people pleaser.

I can’t help it, I like everyone to be happy and getting along.

prolonged conflict makes me uncomfortable and I will do whatever I need to do to make sure there is harmony.

It can become a balancing act to be loving and supportive while at the same time honoring your own time and values.

I really don’t like to be the source of irritation, disappointment so I’ve been willing go to great measures to please.

If this sounds like you then you could be a people pleaser too.

Let’s See If You Have The People Pleaser Personality

Take a look at the following questions…

  • Do you find yourself going along with things others want to do?  Or agree with something that does not sit right with you?
  • Do you want everyone to like you?
  • Do you worry about how people will react if you say no to them?
  • Do people always come to you for favors or advice when they need you, but are not as apt to contact you when things are going well for them?
  • Do you think you might not have any friends if you say no?
  • Do you often hurt by others treatment but keep silent?
  • Do you wonder if others are taking advantage of you –
  • Do you avoid conflict with others and feel its a bad thing?
  • Do you have a hard time recognizing the difference between being needed and being loved?
  • Would you rather be dishonest than be the source of disapproval?
  • Do you wonder why everyone treats you like shit when you’re so nice?

If you answered yes to more than three of these questions then you could be a people pleaser.

Being Assertive

The goal is to be assertive and nice. It doesn’t have to be one or the other.

You can say no.

If this sounds like something more than you can manage here are a few tips on how to say no from a recovering people pleaser.

Ask for details before you commit. It’s ok to get as much information as possible before you say “yes.”

I can remember so many times automatically saying “yes” when someone asks for a favor and then asking for details after. Then I would try to work it into my schedule. Ask for details first.

And then take some time to consider your own needs. Really think about if this something that works for you. It’s OK to take the time you need. Let them know you need some time to think about it and will get back to them. Then consider if it is something that you will be comfortable with and enjoy. That buffer of time is important and if someone insists on an answer immediately then just refuse.

Don’t Make Excuses

Don’t make excuses or lie about why you can’t do something. A simple “No” or I have plans is enough.

Or maybe you can tweak a request to make it—or part of it—manageable

You can suggest someone else, or offer an alternative solution

And if you change your mind after you say “No” then you have a right to let that person know you’ve changed your mind.

While it’s not good to be a pushover, it’s no better to be a bully

But Don’t Go Too Far

Don’t go too far the other way and become totally selfish just to prove a point.

We’re talking just good self-care skills which include healthy assertiveness skills.

Here is an exercise to help you along the road to a recovering people pleaser

The next time a group of people trying to decide on a movie or dinner think about what YOU want and voice an opinion. It may seem uncomfortable but it will be good practice. Really think about what you want and let people know. It may mean that the group decides on something you don’t want to do and you go along. That’s ok it’s the process of self-care and healthy assertiveness that is important.

You can listen to others, but ultimately, what you do is your choice. Keep a balance!

Sometimes the needs of other people should come first. Whenever there’s a conflict of desires, try to come up with a solution that will meet both desires halfway, or better yet, a “win-win” situation where both sides get even more than they bargained for.

How Superstitious Are You And Do Superstitions Help?

“How Superstitious Are You And Do Superstitions Help?” written by Bren Koger.

If you are like most people you probably participate in some kind of superstitious thinking.

Would you feel bad if you broke a mirror?

Do you knock on wood or cross your fingers?

How Superstitious Are You?

It turns our the average person is superstitious enough to avoid walking under a ladder.

This is a picture of the entrance to my gym where I work out almost every day.

Today right in front of the check-in desk there was this giant ladder.

How Superstitious Are You And Does Superstitions Help

You pretty much had to go under it to check in.

What did most people do?

They went all the away around and reached across to give the person at the desk their check in card.

How Superstitious Are You And Does Superstitions Help

From what the people at the desk were saying this was happening all morning. Very rarely would someone attempt to go under the ladder even though there was plenty of room.

Based On Statistics

This is in line with a Gallup poll that says more than half of Americans admitted to being at least a little superstitious.

Why is this?

Do Superstitions Help?

There are a few reasons people practice superstitious thinking and why it might be beneficial

It’s a way to feel more in control– Say you’re going for a job interview and you’ve done everything you can possibly do to prepare. You’ve dressed appropriately. You’ve researched the company. You arrive on time.

Having that lucky coin in your pocket is just one more thing you can do to help.

This can act as a placebo effect and help you believe that luck is on your side. Belief is powerful. There is one study where people were given a golf ball and asked to make 10 putts. Half were told that the ball was lucky and these people made 35% more successful putts than the others did.

If you think something will help you, it may actually help you. Because you believe it can.

It boosts confidence and reduces tension. Studies show “Engaging in superstitious thoughts and behaviors may be one way to reach top levels of performance,” because it eases anxiety and reduces tension. Just knowing you have that lucky coin in your pocket helps to calm your nerves and this puts you in a flow where you can think more clearly and perform at your peak.

Final Thoughts on Superstitions

So the next time you find yourself crossing your fingers or knocking on wood you’re actually doing yourself a favor by increasing confidence level and reducing tension.
