Are you looking to improve your email marketing results?

I bet if you are doing email marketing you are always to improve your results… because it affects your business’ bottom line.

If you are not doing email marketing for your business you are really missing out.  It’s an important aspect in any marketing campaign.  There are so many reasons that you should use email marketing including:

  • Give reasons why your potential clients should buy
  • Build trust over a period of time
  • Keep you in the back of your potential clients’ minds
  • etc.

That’s one of the reasons I decided to do some testing between Aweber vs Getresponse to see which platform worked the best.

Before we dive into the good stuff, let me give you a little background with regards to my experience with Aweber and GetResponse.

My Autoresponder History

When I started marketing online years ago, I started with Aweber.  My mentor was using it and promoted his affiliate link to me to buy.  So I did.

Aweber is a great tool for beginners because it’s relatively easy to pick up and start using.

I used it for a year before deciding to switch over to GetResponse (mainly because I was told that the deliver-ability was better).

About Six Months Ago

Towards the beginning of this year I noticed that there was a significant drop in my email open rate.  The test emails I had entered into the autoresponder was being now sent to spam in both gmail and hotmail.

I didn’t think too much of it… at the time I was busy focusing on other things, but I knew that several of the mailing platforms had made some algorithm changes as to catch spam email.  I thought that by just telling people to whitelist the emails that my deliver-ability would go up.

About three months ago my dad (yeah, he subscribed to my email list) told me he was worried that something had happened to me because he was no longer receiving my emails.  Hmmm… I was sending them.

About two months ago I was working with a clients email autoresponder and noticed his open rates were averaging 10% or higher and he needed some work on his email titles.

Started Doing Some Testing

During this time I changed domains for my emails to see if that would help… nope.

I wrote a few emails completely with text and made sure the spam score was zero… that didn’t help.

And I segregated the emails out of my list that hadn’t opened an email in the last six months.  I created a “quiet list” of about 1200 emails. That had little effect on my open rate.

To create my segregated list I sent out an initial email (“so what’s up?”) on August 8, 2016 to people that had not opened emails in the last six months that had been on my lists for at least six months.  I got an open rate of 0.27% and a 28.47% bounce rate.

To those that didn’t open that email I changed the email title around (“[[name]] Is this you?”) on August 9, 2016 and got a 0.40% open rate and a 28.16% bounce rate.

Then on August 11 I followed up with another email to those who hadn’t opened either email with a new email title (“i thought we were friends”) and got a 0.31% open rate, a 0.09% unsubscribe rate, and a 27.91% bounce rate.

On August 14 I again sent another email (i decided to call it quits – sorry) and got a 0.27% open rate and a 28.21% bounce rate.

Finally on August 16 I sent a final email (this is my last goodbye) to those whom hadn’t opened a single email yet and got a 0.09% open rate and a 28.13% bounce rate.

Then I segregated everyone whom hadn’t opened a single email and put them in their own list.  The plan was I would at use the list to run Facebook ads.

Introducing Aweber

Since the switch to Getresponse, I had kept my payments going to Aweber.  I felt that I didn’t want to let that account go.  I thought about switching back several times, especially when I learned about AW Pro Tools to help automate some aspects of Aweber, but then Getresponse soon after released their beta of Automation so I decided to stick around and try it out.

It was at this time when I started doing more work on one of my clients email funnels in Aweber and I kept on seeing open rates much high on my with solo ad traffic (the majority of my traffic is warm market).

It was then that I decided to do a test.

My Test

I started off testing Getresponse vs Aweber by sending test emails to my gmail and hotmail accounts.  I sent simple text only emails, and made sure the spam score on both was zero.

Aweber delivered.  Getresponse hit the spam.

I then imported my “dead” list into Aweber.  This is where the results get REALLY interesting.

Within 24 hours I got a surprising open rate from what was supposed to be a dead list.

With just ONE EMAIL (“I missed you”) I got an open rate of 2.2%.  Even more surprising was that my bounce rate was only 2.0% vs around a 28% bounce rate for GetResponse.

I’m continuing to do more tests.  I have a new list developing where the open rates of 20 emails in an autoresponder ranging from an open rate of 10% to 50%.  That is unheard of in my Getresponse campaign…. using the exact same email titles in both.

Aweber Features

While I was using Aweber there are several things that I love about the tool.

  • The open rate dashboards are far superior to that of Getresponse.  You can quickly see which emails are performing and which ones are not, and make adjustments as needed.
  • The simple automation added in Aweber make it easy to add people in other lists when they subscribe to another.  Or you can have someone unsubscribed from a list when they are added to another list.  This helps with list management (AW Pro Tools has a lot more functionality that you can use to make your campaigns more dynamic).
  • You can easily tag emails so you can track and segregate within a single list.

My Choice

My choice is pretty easy after doing all my testing… and that is to pick Aweber of Getresponse.  I’m in the process of moving my entire list over.  It’s not an easy process because I have to rebuild email campaigns and change over the coding of 50+ capture pages, but it’s definitely worth a higher open rate.

If open rate is important in your email campaigns (and I’m sure it is), then the evidence made it an easy decision to switch from GetResponse to Aweber.

Since you already understand the importance of email marketing software, and are now looking to choose, a tool for your business, let’s dive right in.

Proper Email Marketing Software for Your Business

You could have the best email marketing campaign is in terms of content.  You could have a HUGE mailing list.  But f you do not have the proper tool to distribute your emails and then check the results, all of your hard work will be in vain. Email marketing software is designed to make sending emails and tracking results easier so you can be more effective.

There are a large number of companies offering different email marketing solutions. Some email software can only help you distribute your emails, while others feature comprehensive statistics facilities.  Not all email marketing software programs are treated equal.  The best email marketing software should help you:

  • Easily send attractive email messages;
  • Measure and track the response from your readers;
  • Keep your subscriber list accurate and up-to-date;
  • Make sure your emails arrive on-time, every time.

Ok, so that makes sense.  But there is a lot more to email marketing software.  So when choosing email marketing software for your business, keep these key points in mind:

The tools that your email marketing software provides is key for your success.  If you do not get the right tools then you are not being as efficient as you can be.   Good email marketing software should have tools that:

Allow you to distribute targeted emails.  In other words you should be able to easily create different group of email subscribers and post messages separately to each group.

Make it easy to subscribe or un-subscribe  and ensure compliance with anti-spam rules.   Your email management system should make sure your emails always identify who you are and automatically include an unsubscribe link. This will help you comply with the CASL (Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation) laws that came into effect July 1, 2014.

Give you sophisticated statistics.  You should be able to easily see the number of the emails sent, the number of the emails opened, and link tracking.   The software should show statistics in the form of percentages for things like the ratio between the people who opened the email and those who received it, the people who received it and who unsubscribed, the people who opened it and those who clicked on a link, etc…

Key Point #2: Help You Make Great Looking Emails

When your subscribers receive your emails first impressions count!  Your email marketing software must make it easy for you to create beautiful and engaging email messages.  These emails have to look good no matter where or how they’re viewed. The keys to this are your templates and the software’s built-in email editor:

Ready-to-use email templates.   Your email marketing software should provide attractive, ready-to-use email templates that are mobile-ready.  By mobile-ready I mean they work well on both desktop email clients and mobile devices: the layout adjusts to suit the screen width and features of whatever device it is viewed on.

Custom-designed templates.  You want the ability to create your own email templates so your emails can match your brand, website, and unique content.

Plain-text messages.  Since some people prefer not to receive graphic or HTML-based emails, you need to be able to automatically include a plain-text version of your message.

Easy-to-use email editor. Creating your emails must be easy and intuitive.  You want to be able to quickly create, preview and update your emails from within your browser.

Send test emails.  Your email marketing software should let you send an unlimited number of test emails to yourself and others.  Test emails help you make sure your email message looks perfect before you send it out to your readers.

Key Point #3: Easy Management of Your Email Subscribers

Email Marketing SoftwareEmail marketing software helps you focus on your business, rather than the administrative aspects of managing your email list.  It should be help you with:

Complete list management.  Your email tool should automatically handle all new signups, unsubscribes, bounces and spam complaints behind the scenes so you never need to go in and do manual updates.

Single and double opt-in lists.  You want the option to be able to ask new subscribers to confirm their email address when joining your list, or to import existing “confirmed” emails to your subscriber list.

Unlimited number of email lists.  You should be able to create as many email lists as you want.  This will help you group your subscribers to go through different autoresponder sales funnels, or to send different broadcasts or newsletters.  If may want to send different emails to people interested in different offers or programs.

Subscriber preference management.  You have a better chance of keeping subscribers when they can update their contact details (such as a change in email address) and manage their own preferences (like areas of interest or message frequency).

Able to build custom opt-in forms.  The ability to customize opt-in forms for people to subscribe to yoru mailing lists can help you better target your audience.  You want opt-in forms that are easily built, and do not require you to write the code.

Allow you to export your subscriber list and create backups.  Your email list is a very important part of your online business marketing, therefore maintaining a backup of that list is critical. Make sure your email marketing software allows you to select the fields you want to export from any subscriber list into a spreadsheet or text file.

Key Point #4: Email Marketing Software Marketing Reports

Good email marketing software has a number of automatically generated reports to help you understand how your email campaigns are doing at a glance. While this is not a show stopper if your email marketing software doesn’t have this, it is a tool that will help you make your email campaigns more effective.

All too often email marketing campaigns fail because the emails do not get delivered.  Therefore your email marketing software should help you improve your deliverability:

Schedule your email delivery.  You should be able to schedule your emails they arrive at the day and time you want (this is even better if you can set it so it arrives at whatever time you want no matter where your subscriber lives in the world).  Not only does this allow you to schedule the email around your day, rather than scheduling your day around the email, it also helps you target precise delivery times.  With some experimentation you may find that emails delivered at a specific day and time may have a better chance of being opened.

Perform spam tests.  Your email marketing software should be able to help you test your email against popular spam filters at the desktop, server, and firewall level prior to sending.  It should be able to help you identify what parts of your email that may be flagged as spam, and therefore allow you to make the necessary changes before sending.

Key Point #6: The Cost Of Your E-mail Software

There is a lot of software out there to choose form, set a budget and find software within that budget. There are plenty of programs that will do the work you need.  Some of these email marketing software programs are not that expensive. Be careful about the cost – some companies charge per number of emails sent, while other companies have flat monthly fees depending on the size of your email list.

Many of the more popular email marketing software have different ways of addressing these features.  Make sure you take advantage of the trials that they offer to make sure you like how they work.

So you want to grow your business… and of course make more money.  The internet is a great way of doing this because you can get right into someone’s home, introduce yourself, and present your offer… with email marketing.

Email marketing is a very effective marketing tool for businesses online. It is an extremely effective way to reach out to your customers.  Customers tend to prefer receiving permission-based marketing communications by email vs. other ways of marketing.

Email Marketing is also an effective way to build and reinforce long term relationships through providing lots of value and content, as well as offering special offers.  This also helps to serve to keep your product or service in the back of your customer’s mind.

Email client service providers have worked diligently over the years to minimize spam and spam complaints.  By doing this, these email service providers established best practices that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) can trust.  People are inundated by spam email all the time, and so building this trust is paramount in order to help ensure email deliverability.  With many inbox providers and/or your email solution providers, your email newsletters may not even make it into your customer’s inbox…. And instead get stuck in the purgatory known as the spam folder.

Ok, you plan to ramp up your email marketing to grow your business online.  But before you start here are six email marketing tips that will help improve your results.

Here are some useful tactics to help you ensure your messages are designed to not only avoid the spam button, but also help ensure they are opened and the reader takes action.

1) Identify Yourself to Your Reader

This is probably the most important of our “email marketing tips”.  Your email campaign will fail before you even really begin if you fail to identify yourself up front.  You need to tell them who you are and why you are contacting them.  You can have the best email copy in the world, but if your reader doesn’t know who you are you then you can be a victim to the This Is Spam button.

The most basic way of doing this is to say at the beginning of the email something like, “You are receiving this because…”  Make sure you remind them why they got the email.

A technique Bren and I use is called the bridge video.  Once they opt into the email request form, we like to send our subscribers to a webpage where we have a couple minute long video of us thanking them for subscribing to our mailing list.  We tell them to look for emails from us, and give them an idea of what to expect in those emails.  Not only does this set the expectation of receiving emails, but it also give them an opportunity to connect the name on the From of the emails to a face.

2) Create Visual Appeal In Your Emails

There are a lot of ways of achieving this second concept in our list of email marketing tips.  Some people like to use the templates provided by the email service provider to create beautiful emails.  I have seen some really eye catching emails that I love to open and read.  But keep in mind that when adding images, be sure to keep them small in file size or you may risk having them blocked.

You should also make sure you have “alt text” included for your images because not all images will be loaded at delivery.  You want something to be displayed in case the image is not seen… at least until they enable images.

Personally, I prefer to keep the images to a minimum, but make the emails visually appealing by keeping the email columns narrow.  A single relatively narrow column of email copy makes it a lot easier to read.  When you further have short sentences, short paragraphs, and spaces between paragraphs, it makes the copy a lot easier to read.

3) Keep The Subject Line Short and To the Point

This is one of those email marketing tips that I learned when we first started, but never really applied until much later.  I it was because I didn’t quite understand the reasoning at first.

Precise, concise email subject lines followed by short declarative sentences keep your email readers opening your emails, and actually reading through all your email copy.  Typically short subjects lines of less than 15 characters actually have the highest open rate vs. longer subject lines.

4) Develop Trust and Build a Relationship with Your Readers

One simple way to achieve this email marketing tip is to make sure your subscriber knows exactly what they can expect joining your email list, including the frequency of your newsletter.  This is another benefit of the bridge video I discussed earlier: we tell our subscriber to expect daily emails.  After establishing this framework of expectation, regular emails will help build a relationship with your reader as long as you provide lots of value.  But don’t over promote your offer. Keep your message educational, relevant and timely.  Follow the 80/20 rule where 80% of the time you deliver content, and 20% of the time you promote your offer.

5) Segment Your Email Mailing List

As you build your business, your email marketing newsletter will serve more than one purpose.  We like to have one main email list, and then split off people who may be interested in particular topics of offers.  For example if we are participating in a product launch, we will provide an opt in form for our readers so that they can decide if they want to tell us if they are interested in more information.  When they subscribe to the sub-list, we then send them product launch specific emails.  This is called the “Split and Soak” technique.  You don’t want to “spam” your main email list.  Instead you get readers to express an interest for more information in your offer.  When they subscribe you then bombard them with additional emails explaining all the ins and outs of your offer from different angles.

The advantage of this is that you don’t burn out your main list.  At any time these subscribers can opt out of the secondary list (make sure you make it clear up front in each email why they are receiving these additional emails and how they can opt out).

6) Provide a Clear Call to Action

If you have done everything we have talked about, it should be a simple step to ask your readers to do something.  Don’t always just ask for an order.  A call to action could be having readers check out a video, go to a blog post, comment on Facebook, or anything else you want your readers to do.  Just make sure the call to action is very clearly presented in the email.

If the call to action is to have them click on a link, we like to present this call to action at least three times throughout the email. Some of these calls to action will be very clearly saying CLICK HERE, while others will just be hyperlinked text talking about the offer.

Email marketing can be an extremely powerful way to grow your business.  You get to develop a relationship with your readers, turning cold leads (people who don’t know you) to warm leads (people who like to read your emails, and like and trust you).

There are a lot of stand-alone email marketing tools available in a wide variety of price ranges to choose from. A lot of these “email marketing tools” do a great job of helping you manage thousands of email subscribers, and create and deliver emails.

But how do you know what is the right fit for you and your needs?

In order to understand whether a particular system will work for you, there are several key features that you need to evaluate. I’m going to walk through several things you need to compare before ultimately coming to a decision.

First Things First: How’s the Fit?

Probably the most important thing to consider when evaluating email marketing is how it fits into your business’ big picture. If you really want to really take advantage your email marketing tools, you should integrate it with your website.  In my opinion, the main purpose of a website is to collect emails for your email list.  If you are not doing this, you are missing a huge potential.  

It’s also really important that you take the time to find a system that offers a smooth integration.  Otherwise you won’t be able to grow your business as quickly as you could.

Beyond the integration with your website, there are some key points you need to look at when comparing email marketing tools.

CAN-SPAM Compliance

You want your selected email marketing tools to help you remain compliant with the laws.  For example, the Federal CAN-SPAM legislation includes only a few, easy-to-implement requirements for commercial email, but most people don’t know what they are.  For example, an unsubscribe link that automatically updates user preferences should be a part of any email, and it should be fool-proof (automatic) to use.

Email Marketing Tools Should Make Email Creation Easy

The web-based email marketing tools should offer features that make it quick and easy for you to create the emails. At the very least, look for:

  • Easy-to-use integrated HTML editor that makes writing email similar to using a word processor;
  • Libraries of email templates;
  • An email previewer to make sure the emails look good on different platforms;

Bounced Email Handling

If you send repeated emails to bad email addresses not only is a waste of resources, it’s also a good way to get mistaken for a spammer. The email marketing tools you are looking at should track bounced emails and automatically purge bad email addresses from your email list.

HTML and Plain Text

If you send an HTML email to a subscriber who’s email tool can’t display HTML, it will looking like a jumbled mess to them.  That is a quick way to have your email end up deleted.  Your email system should support a multi-part mime email format, with a separate text version that will be sent to subscribers who can’t see HTML emails.

Subscriber-Controlled Subscribe and Unsubscribe Functionality

Your email should be able to give subscribers the chance to not only unsubscribe, but also to update the subscribers preferred subscription email, etc.

Easy to Read Email Metrics

Your email marketing tools should be able to present key information in an easy to read format.  It should be able to show:

  • How many emails bounced;
  • How many emails were opened;
  • How many people click through the image to your audience final destination;
  • How many people unsubscribed.

Your Email Marketing Tools Decision

Addition things that your email marketing tools should be able to:

  • Immediately give access to subscriber-only web content when a new subscriber joins online, and to immediately send basic membership materials by email.
  • Standard templates for email campaigns that could be prepared by a graphic artist and kept for reuse in the email system. Newsletter authors could then later use the template, add some content, and then send to subscribers.
  • Using email and your website in combination with good email marketing tools can be a lot more effective than if either was used alone.  You can have calls to action in the email to click on a link, which will take them to a specific page in your website.
  • Easily show exactly how many emails were sent in the email campaign or broadcast, how many bounced, how many were opened, how many recipients click a link on the email, and how many unsubscribed. It should also be able to easily reveal a list of recipients, with the action each took. Future emails could be based on the actions taken on previous emails. For example, a special mailing could be sent to those who clicked on your, which could indicate that they are interested in your offer.

As you can see, there are a lot of things to consider, so you need to take your time.  Choosing the right of email marketing tools for you and your business can have a significant impact on your business results.

If you have never used email campaign software, you should look for services that provide a free or low cost trial.  That way you can take the email campaign software for a test drive before you continue to buy it and integrate it into your business. This shouldn’t be a problem because a lot of email software providers offer a one month trial.

It is unfortunate that so many online marketers do not use email autoresponders to help collect and promote their content and products.  I talk to marketers all the time and it seems like 90% do not utilize an autoresponder.  These people are handicapping their business.

And when many do start using an autoresponder, they don’t know how to create newsletter emails that were effective.

When We Started We Didn’t Know How to Create Newsletter Emails

Yup… when we started we had no clue how to promote to our email list.

We were given a capture page, and told to drive traffic to it.  Since our blog was pretty new and we had little traffic, I decided to join a traffic co-op and pay for people to click and go to my capture page (which would then hopefully convert into leads).

It worked really well… we started having leads flood in.

But then what?

Well I hastedly created a series of autoresponder emails on our Aweber account, borrowing ideas for the autoresponder emails of leaders, but within a few emails I could see our open rates dropping quick.  Then when our leads got past the autoresponder emails, we sent them the occasional broadcast…. but the open rate on those were getting even worse.

We even made the mistake of taking a few weeks off from mailing the list.  We just didn’t know what to send them… the sales/pitchy emails we were sending was driving the list into a state of refusal.  The walls were coming up between us and our leads.  Our open rates were horrible.

And we didn’t know what to do.

Then I Woke Up  – Looked to Leaders to Learn How to Create Newsletter Emails

We had to do something.

So we talked to a few successful online marketers, and studied what they did by joining the lists of leaders in the industry.  We took the time to really learn how to create newsletter emails that made these entrepreneurs money.

We knew we were not fans of the sales/pitchy emails, so we discarded those emails.  We thought that since we didn’t like the pitchy emails then other people wouldn’t either.

Then we changed things up.

How to Create Newsletter Emails The Way We Do Now

We now send TONS of content to our list.

Since we blog every day and we want to make sure we get a lot of eyes on our blog posts, we started sending an email every day about the next blog post we wanted them to see.  I batch created the newsletter emails (usually 3-5 at a time).  That means that often the blog post may be a few days old by the time it gets to the list, but in my opinion that is ok… the time savings by batch creating the emails was worth the risk of potentially sending someone to a blog post they already read.

How to Create Newsletter Emails to Create SalesWe want to send our list to our blog every day to make sure they got as much value from our website as possible.

Then whenever we had an opportunity, like the IPAS2 system product launch, that we wanted to promote we sent those emails in addition to the content emails.  This meant we only sent promotional emails when needed, but the rest of the time we just sent value.

Imagine if we only sent the promotional emails when we had something special to promote… our list would get no emails for a few months.  Then they would suddenly get a series of emails out of the blue.  By that point people on the list would probably have forgotten who we were, and just delete the emails, unsubscribe, or worse… mark the email as spam.

Now imagine if we just send sales/pitchy emails every day…. just like almost everyone else.  We would blend in with all the other spammers.  People on your list, who probably already belong to several other lists, would probably just stop opening the emails because they had nothing really to of value to offer.  If you then had a special offer, you would increase the number of emails… and then people on the list may get annoyed and unsubscribe from your list and/or mark the email as spam.

That is why we now send tons of value to our list.

So What Were the Other Things We Learned About How to Create Newsletter Emails?

The following is a list of other things we learned:

  • Get people into the habit of opening your emails.  If you can get them to open three emails consecutively, then they will start to get into the habit of opening future emails as well.  So we focused on building a completely value added autoresponder email campaign called our “free bootcamp training” which is designed to offer a lot of tips and value with building an online business.
  • Make sure at least 80% of your emails are value.  Make people look forward to opening up your emails because of all the value you offer.  Blogging every day really helps with this because you always have something to send to your list.
  • Don’t constantly try to sell things up front in your emails.  Make sure that if you have an offer, it is after giving a lot of value and content.
  • If you really want people on your list to do something, try and have at least three calls to action in your email asking them to do something.  There is power in asking something three times from someone (watch a kid ask for something from there parent… they ask at least three times).  🙂
  • Always test your email list.  Make sure you are subscribed to your email list, and test the links.  I can’t tell you how many times being subscribed to our list has helped catch problems that could be corrected for future emails.

Your email list is an important part of your online business… your list is your biggest asset.  Therefore it is very important to know how to create newsletter emails to your list.

Sending your list a lot of valuable content is very important to building that relationship you need with your list.
