Now imagine this… what if those paying customers could also test your newest ideas for services or products?

And yet even better… imagine if you had the chance to spend time creating great content — while getting paid for your effort over and over again?

This doesn’t have to be a dream.  Your businesses can have all of this with a membership site.

That’s why I want to talk to you about how to build a membership website.

Tips on How to Build a Membership Website

Before we go too much further let’s answer the question…

What Is a Membership Website

A membership website is a private website, with exclusive content.  It may also have the ability for members to interact with one another. Members can either pay you a one time, a monthly fee, or a combination of the two.  You can also have different fees for different levels of access.

You can also use a membership platform to sell one-off products.

And I can’t think of a better way to brand yourself and get your name out there as an authority in your niche.

You’ve probably come across sites like these before like with online network marketing companies.

The following tips are from what I’ve learned from running our membership website, boiled down into seven easy-to-use tips:

Tip #1 On How To Build A Membership Website: Model Other Sites

There are a lot of membership websites out there, and chances are you already belong to one (especially if you have already been marketing online).

When I started to learn how to build a membership website I modeled a lot of of sites.  This included:

  • Their marketing funnels
  • How the pages were structured
  • Seminar structures
  • Price points for products and services

If you belong to a membership site that is… less than ideal… ask yourself what would you do differently?

Now if you don’t belong to a membership site, then try one for a couple months.  Some even have a trial period.

Tip #2 On How To Build A Membership Website: Engage Your Members

Many people use membership websites as a way to provide valuable content for their members either all at once, or dripped out over time.

But what will make members want to join even more is if they have insider access to you.

Depending on your set-up, that could mean:

  • Webinars where members can ask questions through chat or over the phone.
  • A text chat or Skype room where you hold “office hours” or something similar.
  • A private Facebook group where you can interact with members.
  • A contact form that helps ensure you spot members’ messages quickly in your inbox.

And the list goes on.

Tip #3 On How To Build A Membership Website: Give Out Free Stuff

How to Build a Membership WebsiteSomething I did right at the beginning was offer free membership.  It was only given to a small number of people.

Sure it may seem like you are losing out, but you can use this to help bring in people that normally wouldn’t be able to afford the membership.  You can also use it to help test things out, and use their feedback to make the membership site better.  Plus the more people you can get interacting on your membership at the beginning, the more of a community the site will appear to new members: thus making them feel like they are part of something special.

You can pick from people that might be the ones who regularly leave thoughtful comments on your blog, or tweet your posts, or even write about you on their own blog. They are most likely your greatest fans, and will be your most committed members on your membership site.

Tip #4 On How To Build A Membership Website: Guide Them Around

When you first start your membership site, if you are like me then your main concern will probably be ensuring that the new members know they’re getting their money’s worth from the membership.

But then after a year or more, you should have a ton of great content.  At this point you need to help guide your members through your maze.

So make sure your welcome page has something like a quick start guide to walk them through the site.  You can also use email newsletters to remind members of older content they may have missed.  And always backlink from content to older relevant content so members can find more about that topic.

Tip #5 On How To Build A Membership Website: Adapt To Needs

Let’s step back and look at the bigger picture: you are building your membership site for your target customer and to solve THEIR problems.

You need to make sure that anything you build onto the membership site is helping your members solve problems they want to address.  That means you shouldn’t pursue things that they really don’t need.

You may have to occasionally prune older unrelevant content from the membership site.

You should also consider using surveys to determine what your present (and even potential) customers want to see added.  That will help you be as efficient as possible with your time when adding on to your website.

Be mindful that you don’t overwhelm your members with too much new stuff going on.  Try your best to introduce things one a time.  You can even create a release schedule if that helps you get organized.

Tip #6 On How To Build A Membership Website: Don’t Wait to Figure It Out

How to Build a Membership WebsiteFor a long time I knew about how to build a membership website, the advantages, and loved the idea of monthly income….

But I kept putting it off.

I came up with excuses like:

  • I didn’t think I was good enough.
  • I didn’t think it was worth my time.
  • I thought I didn’t have enough to offer.

That was until I finally made a commitment to myself.  I realized that I would NEVER be completely ready.  And that I could always learn and tweak as I went.

That’s why my very first product was dirt cheap: only $7.  It would help me get started, build up traffic and buyer leads, and I would have something to build on.

Tip #7 On How To Build A Membership Website: Get Started
