How to Use Suspension of Disbelief in Your Favor.
I read a passage from a book called the I Ching almost daily. I just open it to a random page and read a paragraph or two I feel I am suppose to read for that day. It’s equivalent to what my mom calls “doing her daily devotions” where she reads a passage from the bible and a daily motivational passage from a book designed for this purpose.
I recently read in the I Ching, “it is not necessary to have more faith, but a suspension of disbelief to see what is already there.”
So I started thinking of the phrase “suspension of disbelief “and realized I had questions:
• What does suspension mean?
• How do I do suspend disbelief?
• How can I apply this to my life on a daily basis in a practical way?
What does Suspension of Disbelief Mean?
When I started researching the phrase I found that we practice a suspension of disbelief commonly than I realized.
Spoiler alert- This may change the way you watch movies.
Think about the last action movie you watched, chances are you suspended disbelief without realizing it. First, you had to ignore the reality that you were viewing a two-dimensional moving image on a screen and temporarily accept it as reality in order to be entertained.
And then for the stunts and special effects you had to suspend disbelief again when the good guy got away with shooting a gun in public place, never running out of ammunition or getting shot himself.
In reality no one is strong enough to catch himself on a windowsill as they are falling down the side of a twenty-story building, but somehow we suspend our disbelief long enough to believe that this is possible.
How about a movie set in a foreign country where all the actors speak another language entirely and fluently (example: a setting in Germany where people dressed as German citizens speak fluent English).
I would never rent a movie like “The Fast and the Furious”with Vin Diesel and the late Paul Walker, but I did see parts of it today in the cardio room at my gym. Vin Diesels character gets angry at Paul Walkers character and ends up punching him several times (hard) in the face. As big as Vin Diesel is you would expect Paul Walker’s face to be a bloody mess, or at least have a swollen eye or a cut lip, but nothing; not a scratch and as handsome as ever.
So why not use suspension of disbelief to assist us in manifesting our desires?
The Wikipedia definition of suspension is a temporary cessation, as a law or rule.
Suspension of disbelief is a willingness to suspend (temporary cessation) one’s critical faculties and believe the unbelievable; sacrifice of realism and logic for the sake of enjoyment.
So Let’s Practice Suspension of Disbelief
Are you willing to temporarily ignore your thinking, logical mind and believe the unbelievable to allow your desires to manifest?
Sacrifice what is real and logical.
Like going to a movie where you ignore your present reality for a couple of hours.
Kids call it pretend.
So relax and get into a comfortable position close your eyes.
And picture a virtual movie screen in front of you on the wall and with your imagination visualize a desired outcome in any area of your life. It could be a car or a café in Paris or a huge bank account. This exercise is from the SILVA METHOD and is used to develop your imagination and visualization abilities. You can project yourself as you are now, and on the screen, make corrections that reflect what you want to experience. The more you charge that imagination with emotions of desire, belief and expectancy, the faster your desire will manifest. Do this for three minutes a day and then suspend disbelief, again, by being totally open minded as to how it will come to you. Be open to expected and unexpected ways to take action and remember it only has to be a temporary cessation of doubt to see results.
Have fun, play, pretend, be open and allow
And you will see that as Abraham Hicks says, “When you ask the answer is always yes.” You just have to be able to suspend your disbelief long enough to see it.”
