The weather here in Cincinnati at certain times of the year can be a challenge. This area of the country is rated one of the top worst cities for allergy season.
It can leave you feeling drained
Combine that with getting stuck in traffic and a myriad of other things that can cause stress in the day and some days it can be a little overwhelming to be out and about.
We can’t control allergens in the air, traffic conditions or any of the stressors in our life but you can control how you choose to respond to them.
So what do you do when you can feel your vital energy being sapped and drained from uncontrollable external forces?
If you’re out in traffic or running errands you many not be in a place where you can close yourself off in a room and do a formal meditation here are a few quick simple ways you can stay grounded and centered from anywhere.
Tips to Stay Grounded From Anywhere
Breathe -Focusing on your breath by inhaling for three counts. Hold for three counts. Exhaling for three counts for a few rounds can do wonders in bringing you back to the present moment. In times of stress we tend to breath in shallow rapid breaths and this contributes to our feeling of anxiety. By consciously slowing the breath down we are sending vital oxygen and nutrient coursing through our bodies.
The Tony Robbins breathing exercise is mentioned in the book “Unlimited Power” and basically consists of breathing in the following ratio
Breath in for one count
hold for 4 counts
breath out for two counts
Set aside some time=
Set Aside Some Time for Later -If you are over analyzing a situation and you feel like your thoughts are in a loop. Tell yourself you will set some time to think about things. Later and then schedule some time with yourself where you can think about things and problem solve. Don’t allow the thoughts you are having run you. Take charge.
Get Grateful– Go over a list of 10 things you are grateful for
Science tells us that gratitude makes us healthier. Gratitude also adds to the bottom line – in very real ways. And the best news about gratitude is that it requires little time and you can practice it anywhere.
Try using “Hand Yoga“. Hand yoga is the act of stretching and tensing/relaxing the muscles in your hands. It may sound strange, but for some people it’s an excellent way to relieve stress – Spread your fingers and stretch out both hands as much as possible.
Hold this position for a few seconds, then release it.
Curl each finger individually into your palm, pushing gently with your thumb. Hold it, then release.
Flex your wrists and bend each knuckle individually to “shake out” the muscles and joints.
Recite a passage or mantra that is meaningful to you.
I love this verse from the bible. It immediately calms me.
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7
Stress is only a state of mind and any situation is temporary. By using these simple tools you will be able to calm yourself from anywhere.

Everyone experiences worrisome thoughts, everything from finances to health and relationships. What separates an anxious person from a calm one isn’t the content of their thoughts, it’s how they react to them.
