How To Make A Remarkable Marketing Website

“How To Make A Remarkable Marketing Website” written by Mike Marko.

You’ve seen terrible websites. You’ve heard cheesy music playing the second you hit the site. And you’ve seen websites that look so busy and flashing like Los Vegas casinos.

With so much competition on the internet today, it’s important that you website stands out from the crowd AND introduces your brand to the digital world. If you don’t do it… your competitors will.

That’s why I’m sharing the following tips to help make your business and website remarkable.

Tips On How To Make A Remarkable Marketing Website

Be Unique

Dare to be different! The most common mistake of website owners, designers, or marketers, is that they are afraid to be too different. Usually when someone starts to build his online presence he uses some web pages for reference. This can be helpful, but these are supposed to be only for reference!

Keep it Clean

Use white space to help make your website friendly for your visitors. Many designers feel the need to occupy EVERY bit of space on the monitor, but the reality is that if your website feels cluttered and busy your visitor could be hitting the back button and visiting your competitors.

Make It Easy

Make it easy for visitors to find what they are looking for on your website.  Don’t have every single page listed in the menu… instead highlight the important ones and then have them find a logical path to other pages.  Remember you can have additional links at the bottom of you website.

Font Choices

Let’s be real: Arial and Times New Roman can be boring.  Nowadays designers are no longer limited to only a few choices.  The key is to choose two or three fonts that are easy to read and keep them consistent throughout the website.

Quick Loading

You only have 2-3 seconds to make an impression on your visitors.  If the page takes 10 seconds or more to load because of large file sized banner graphics then your visitors will get frustrated and leave quickly.  Be certain to optimize your banner images, videos, java files, and CSS files.  If your website still loads slow you may have to look at changing your website theme.

Color Palette

Your website shouldn’t be colored like a rainbow.  The fewer colors you select for your brand the better.  I recommend limiting your color palette to 2 or 3 colors.  Keep the colors relatively subdued except for the occasional splash of color for headlines or graphics you want to stand out (like buttons).

Keep Forms Simple

Nobody wants to complete a complicated form to opt into your newsletter or to contact the business.  Keep your form fields to a minimum and make it simple for prospects to use.  If you MUST use captcha then make sure they are viewable by the end user.  I recommend opt in forms have first name, last name, and email fields.  Think clean, simple and minimal.

Click. Click. Bang

Reduce the barrier to make purchases on your website.  That means reduce the number of clicks needed to make a purchase.  A good rule of them is 3 clicks to make a purchase.

Pick Up The Phone

Not all your visitors will want to fill out a form to contact you: some prefer just to make a call.  Make sure your phone number is easy to find on your website.  Don’t make them hunt for it.

Top Nine Tips For An Effective Website Design

“Top Nine Tips For An Effective Website Design” written and video by Mike Marko.

Are you looking to ensure visitors stay on your website, and even subscribe to your newsletter or even better yet buy something?

That’s the goal of most people when they create their website.  And it can seem daunting if you don’t have the right guidance.

That’s why I wanted to give you my top nine tips for an effective website design.

Effective Website Design

In the following video I talk about my top five tips for effective website design.

VIDEO: Five Tips For Effective Website Design

In the video above I talke about my top five tips for an effective website design.  I’m going to embellish a bit more on the top and then go over another four more design tips.

1. Your Logo

Your website logo is an important part of your brand.  That means you should spend some time on it.  Use a high-resolution image that is as small as possible while still looking good (for website load times).

It’s also a very good idea to hyperlink the logo back to your home page so visitors can more easily navigate your website.

2. Navigation

Your website navigation should be intuitive and simple.  If it is difficult for vistors to find things then they’ll leave your website.

There is the “primary navigation” typically at the top of the website.  This horizontal menu bar needs to be easy to follow otherwise you’ll lose a lot of visitors. Focus on the more important pages in the menu bar, and put the secondary links at the bottom of the website.

Another great idea is to use a “secondary navigation” option in the right (or left) column.  I use a blog directory tree, but you can easily choose other links that are important to your visitors (or pages you want to make sure they see).

3. Eliminate Clutter

It’s too easy to make a website visually overwhelming with images.  It can cause a lot of confusion because there are too many options to choose from.

To help the visitors become less confused (and therefore leave prematurely) its best to not have competing calls to aaction or visual clutter.  Don’t distract from the main focus of the page.  Consider limiting the links and options in the header to narrow the focus further.

It also helps to keep paragraphs shorter.  A single paragraph can be no more than five to six lines.  That makes the content easier to read.

4. White Space

Make sure you have enough white space between paragraphs and images.  If things are too crowded they are a lot harder to take in.

When you control the white space on the website you can help ensure they visitor sees the important, key points you want them to take in.  It will also improve the visitor experience.

5. Color

Part of effective website design is how you use color.  Don’t make your website a kaleidoscope of color.

Start with mostly a neutral color palette.  This will help your site look clean, elegant, and updated.  Use color sparingly to help accent things like headlines or key graphics (like buttons).

You should also use a color palette that complements your logo and banner design.

Struggling Getting the Business Success You Deserve – yellow text 3

6. Good Photos

You only have a few seconds to give a first impression.

If you only use generic photos then you’ll leave your visitor with a generic impression.  You shouldn’t want a generic impression so take the time to invest in professional photography.

Professional photography (or purchased professional stock photos) draw the eye in and help provide an emotional connection with the written material.

7. Fonts

Effective website design really includes careful selection of font.  You need to make sure the font can be read on all devices.

Now this is where many miss the mark… understand your target audience!  I have seen way too often the situation where the website is geared towards an older audience yet they use smaller font… making it hard for their audience to read their website even with glasses.

I recommend at a minimum pick a font size of no less than 11 pt (though I prefer larger for most websites).  You should also try to stick with only two font families for the entire website.  This is a desktop publishing “rule” but also holds true for websites.  Plus it will also help with website load speeds.

8. Every Page Is A Landing Page

Let’s face it… if you design your website right and are getting traffic from multiple sources then people will not be arriving to the site on the main page.  That is especially true if you have a blog with content.

Make sure you design the website such that no matter how the visitor finds your site, that the key information is on the page to get them to perform the actions you want them to perform.  Be conscious in your design with regards how you want the visitors to flow on each page (to opt in or to another page).

9. Get In The Fold

Essential information needs to be above the fold.

But what is the fold?  The fold is what you see when you first load a website.  When you have to scroll down to see it then it’s below the fold.

That’s why for effective website design I often recommend against full size sliders or images that cover 2/3’s of the page above the fold.  Everything above the fold (both on desktop and mobile views) is critical to the success of your website.

Final Thoughts on Effective Website Design

Follow these nine effective website design tips to help ensure that you have a very good visitor experience… a visitor experience that entices the visitor to stay on the website longer and take an action you desire.

How Long Should You Buy A Website Domain

“How Long Should You Buy A Domain” written and video by Mike Marko.

Are you about to buy or renew your domain and not sure how long to buy it for?

You are often given choices of 1, 2, 5, and 10 years to pick from (and maybe other choices as well).  So what one should you pick?

The answer to that question is covered in today’s blog post.

How Long Should You Buy A Website Domain

The following video talks about how long to buy a website domain.

VIDEO: Buying or Renewing A Website Domain

[jwplayer player=”1″ mediaid=”21154″]

Term For The Website Domain

When buying or renewing a domain, its best to pick the longest period possible.  The benefits of this can include:

  • Cheaper price overall
  • You don’t have to worry about renewing for a while
  • For SEO purposes

Website Term and SEO Impact

While it can’t be easily confirmed, many believe how long you buy your website for can affect your performance in search engines.  Search engines like Google know how long the term is for a website.  The think is that if the term is only a year, then there is a good chance that the website is a temporary website… and temporary websites shouldn’t rank as well against more permanent websites.

Therefore having a ten year or longer term may improve your search engine results.

Where to Get Websites

There are lots of places to get your own website address. It really doesn’t matter where you get the address from.  The two places I recommend are:

  1. GoDaddy
  2. Personal favorite: NameCheap

Final Thoughts on How Long Should You Buy A Website Domain

It is very important to give careful consideration as to how long to buy a domain.  Unless you are pinching pennies, follow the advice in this blog post to get you the best return on your investment.

7 Unstoppable Steps How to Get Leads With a Blog

7 Unstoppable Steps How to Get Leads With a Blog” written by Mike Marko.

Are you struggling to get leads for your personal business?

I get it.  I was there.  Over a year ago Bren and I were completely stuck… no traffic to our offer, no good leads, and almost no sales.

We were losing money.

Then I found the way on how to get leads and start to building our business using the internet… and generating consistent traffic.  And that is by using a powerful blogging system.

7 Steps On How To Get Leads with Your Blog

I am going to show you the 7 steps to creating a blog post that will help you get the traffic you need to get sales.  These are the same steps I use to rank the majority of our blog posts.  First thing’s first… let’s find something to write about.

How to Get Keywords for Your WordPress Blog Post

The first step to building a WordPress blog post that will make money online, is to determine what you are going to write about… specifically what is the keyword phrase you want to write around.  We talked about keyword phrases in the blog post, SEO Basics Tutorial for Beginners – Learn the Basics of SEO.

The following video talks about how you can find keywords that will help you get found on Google or other search engines.

[jwplayer player=”1″ mediaid=”6644″]

As you can see in this video, it is pretty quick to come up with keywords to write around.  I recommend coming up with one primary keyword phrase which you write around, and 1-3 secondary keyword phrases that you mention 1-3 times each within the blog post.

Free Bootcamp Training Mini-Course

How to Create WordPress Blog Post Quickly and Easily

Most of the time, Bren and I start writing our blog posts on a Microsoft Word document.  We’ll write it, and sometime email it back and forth, before dropped the blog post into our WordPress blogging platform.

[jwplayer player=”2″ mediaid=”6355″]

As you can see in the video, it is pretty easy to create a blog post when you first start with a Microsoft Word document.

How to Hyperlink an Image in a WordPress Blog Post

People love to click images.

It’s true.

That’s why almost all (I may have forgotten a few) our images are clickable, where if you click them they take you to a different page.  Some will take you to an offer, some to our free Bootcamp registration page, and others to our contact page.

It is pretty quick to make your images clickable, though many bloggers fail to take advantage of this basic human instinct.  Watch the following video and make your images work for you.

[jwplayer player=”2″ mediaid=”6357″]

As you can see, it’s pretty easy to make your images clickable and send your visitor to another page.  Think through your end goal, and determine exactly where and why you want your visitor to go after clicking the image.

How to SEO Optimize Your WordPress Blog Post

This is probably the most important video in this series.  If you want to know how to get leads with your blog, then you MUST watch this video.  This is where I talk about how to make your blog post into a work horse for your website.

[jwplayer player=”2″ mediaid=”6359″]

SEO’ing your blog is pretty easy.  You just follow the basic steps and you’ll be well underway.

How to Insert a Video Into a WordPress Blog Post

Video is king in your blog.  Bren recently wrote about the triangle of trust where you build confidence by sending your leads to your blog instead directly to your sales page.  The video is there to help build trust, and help your readers get to know you better.

[jwplayer player=”2″ mediaid=”6360″]

Don’t dismiss the power of video for your blog post.  Not only does it help convert your traffic into leads and sales, but it also keeps your visitors on your page longer which reduces bounce rate.  This will help improve the value your blog post has in the “eyes of Google”.

How to Schedule a WordPress Blog Post

You have probably heard Bren and I talk about the important of blogging daily.  I can’t stress that enough.  It both improves your value for Google, but also it gives you a consistent stream of content that your regular visitors will appreciate.

But I also understand it is very difficult to find time every day to blog… especially during vacations, etc.  That’s why it is extremely important to create blog posts in batches and then schedule out when they are published.

Watch the video and learn how to schedule your blog post.

[jwplayer player=”2″ mediaid=”6362″]

Now you are all set… you know the basics of how to get leads with your blog.  It’s pretty easy.

But Wait… I Missed The Last Step

Bren and I rank a lot of our content high in Google, but there is one piece of the puzzle I haven’t mentioned it.  I shared six videos showing you the fundamentals.  But this may not have been as effective without using the blogging platform we use.

We have over 50 blog sites as part of our blog network.  And from our experience, the Influx Entrepreneur blogging platform is the superior blogging system in a lot of ways.  It has a lot of advantages such as

  • It is inexpensive
  • You didn’t have to worry about maintaining the site, and so less headaches,
  • It has a membership site so you could sell your own products and make money directly from PayPal,
  • It has capture pages so you can generate more leads,
  • It came with free themes already integrated into the platform,
  • It came with webinar software so you can promote & sell to groups of people at a time,
  • It ranks in Google a lot easier than hosting your own site,
  • It is self-hosted so you don’t have to be technically inclined,
  • It has its own social media site integrated into the platform.

And there is a lot more advantages…

Normally a platform alone like this would cost $500 or more per month!  Luckily, that isn’t the case here.  To learn more about it click the button below.

Should You Be Using WordPress As a Website

“Should You Be Using WordPress As a Website” written by Mike Marko.

Are you thinking about using WordPress as a website?

Are you looking to create a website because you see the value of having a website?

That’s great, because you have the vision to know why having a website is important to promoting anything online.

Should You Be Using WordPress As a Website?

WordPress is pretty cool.  You can create powerful, professionally looking sites with WordPress without having to learn a ton of coding.  With some practice, you can create a website in a week (or even weekend) what normally would take someone a month or more to do from scratch.  Once you install WordPress on a server, there are a bunch of tools to help build and manage amazing websites.

WordPress works really good for certain types of sites like blogs, personal porfolios, and bruchure sites (for example).  These types of sites are really easy when you are using WordPress as a website platform.  They have well developed plug-ins to make it easy to also build membership sites, e-commerce sites, social networks, and other custom sites.

So what about you?

Should You Be Using WordPress As a Website

When Should You Be Using WordPress as a Website?

Although some claim that WordPress is overkill for super-simple websites: I disagree.  When I talk to clients, I tell them to think of a website like buying a house.  You don’t want to build a website that you’ll quickly outgrow.  Moving to a new platform can be done, but why bother when you can build up a website and have plenty of room to grow in the future.

When you start looking at complex sites, you’ll move into an area where you’ll have to do some coding to get WordPress to work the way you want.  Though there is a point of diminishing return: at some point you may have to do so much hacking and tweaking that it could have been better to build the site from scratch (and using JavaScript, and back-end website programming languages like Ruby or PHP).  This is rarely the case because there are so many themes to choose from with WordPress.

Most people using WordPress as a website platform run basic sites.  These basic sites have a few static pages, a blog (or news) section), and may have some common features like contact forms, newsletter sign up pages, and more.  These features are easily handled with WordPress plug-ins.  These plug-ins help you customize your site.

Therefore most likely you’ll have to activate at least a few plug-ins to get your site looking and working like you want.  In some cases you’ll have to do some template coding to do even more custom content.

Using Themes in WordPress

We have already briefly talked about themes in WordPress.

Themes make it easy to customize your website and make it look like it was done by a professional designer.  There are thousands and thousands of themes.  Many of them look amazing, well-supported, and there are designs for a wide range of typical web industries and trends.  This is why Influx Entrepreneur offers hundreds and hundreds of different, including premium, themes.

When you are using WordPress as a website platform, you will mostly likely begin customizing themes they either free or purchased from a theme developer.

Customizing Themes in WordPress

To properly customize a WordPress theme to the need, you will likely create a child theme.  Using child themes is the preferred method for customizing themes. This involves setting up a new folder in your themes folder, then you copy and paste any files from the main theme you want to customize into this new folder. This can include the main style.css file or one of the theme PHP files.

Now when you are getting into creating child themes and customizing your own themes, someone using WordPress as a website platform needs to start learning a little HTML, CSS and even some PHP. Fortunately this is not like building a website from scratch.  You only need to know a little bit of each of these languages in order to customize the theme.  While the themes, plugins, and WordPress itself do most of the work for you, a little coding goes a long way.

You can cheat in the department a little as well by using tools.  I use Microsoft Expression Web to help generate a lot of the code I need.  You can just create what you want in one window, and the code is automatically generated in another window.  Alternately you can drop in existing code into the one window, and then change the code in the other box using the easy to use user interface.

Final Words

You can learn these basic skills and create the WordPress website you are looking for.

Now that you understand how WordPress works, and the importance of using themes and plug-ins for customization, you are now ready to get started.  There is a natural tenancy for people to want to create their own site and have it hosted.

But installing and setting up WordPress can complicated and confusing.  You also have to keep updating the website whenever WordPress is updated.  Add on top of it all the “upsells” of having to buy the nicer themes and plugins.  That’s why it can be much easier (and cheaper) to use a marketing platform like Influx Entrepreneur.

How to Build a Membership Website

“How to Build a Membership Website” written by Mike Marko.

Are you looking to learn how to build a membership website?

Does earning a regular monthly income and a bunch of loyal customers appeal to you?

Now imagine this… what if those paying customers could also test your newest ideas for services or products?

And yet even better… imagine if you had the chance to spend time creating great content — while getting paid for your effort over and over again?

This doesn’t have to be a dream.  Your businesses can have all of this with a membership site.

That’s why I want to talk to you about how to build a membership website.

Tips on How to Build a Membership Website

Before we go too much further let’s answer the question…

What Is a Membership Website

A membership website is a private website, with exclusive content.  It may also have the ability for members to interact with one another. Members can either pay you a one time, a monthly fee, or a combination of the two.  You can also have different fees for different levels of access.

You can also use a membership platform to sell one-off products.

And I can’t think of a better way to brand yourself and get your name out there as an authority in your niche.

You’ve probably come across sites like these before like with online network marketing companies.

The following tips are from what I’ve learned from running our membership website, boiled down into seven easy-to-use tips:

Tip #1 On How To Build A Membership Website: Model Other Sites

There are a lot of membership websites out there, and chances are you already belong to one (especially if you have already been marketing online).

When I started to learn how to build a membership website I modeled a lot of of sites.  This included:

  • Their marketing funnels
  • How the pages were structured
  • Seminar structures
  • Price points for products and services

If you belong to a membership site that is… less than ideal… ask yourself what would you do differently?

Now if you don’t belong to a membership site, then try one for a couple months.  Some even have a trial period.

Tip #2 On How To Build A Membership Website: Engage Your Members

Many people use membership websites as a way to provide valuable content for their members either all at once, or dripped out over time.

But what will make members want to join even more is if they have insider access to you.

Depending on your set-up, that could mean:

  • Webinars where members can ask questions through chat or over the phone.
  • A text chat or Skype room where you hold “office hours” or something similar.
  • A private Facebook group where you can interact with members.
  • A contact form that helps ensure you spot members’ messages quickly in your inbox.

And the list goes on.

Tip #3 On How To Build A Membership Website: Give Out Free Stuff

How to Build a Membership WebsiteSomething I did right at the beginning was offer free membership.  It was only given to a small number of people.

Sure it may seem like you are losing out, but you can use this to help bring in people that normally wouldn’t be able to afford the membership.  You can also use it to help test things out, and use their feedback to make the membership site better.  Plus the more people you can get interacting on your membership at the beginning, the more of a community the site will appear to new members: thus making them feel like they are part of something special.

You can pick from people that might be the ones who regularly leave thoughtful comments on your blog, or tweet your posts, or even write about you on their own blog. They are most likely your greatest fans, and will be your most committed members on your membership site.

Tip #4 On How To Build A Membership Website: Guide Them Around

When you first start your membership site, if you are like me then your main concern will probably be ensuring that the new members know they’re getting their money’s worth from the membership.

But then after a year or more, you should have a ton of great content.  At this point you need to help guide your members through your maze.

So make sure your welcome page has something like a quick start guide to walk them through the site.  You can also use email newsletters to remind members of older content they may have missed.  And always backlink from content to older relevant content so members can find more about that topic.

Tip #5 On How To Build A Membership Website: Adapt To Needs

Let’s step back and look at the bigger picture: you are building your membership site for your target customer and to solve THEIR problems.

You need to make sure that anything you build onto the membership site is helping your members solve problems they want to address.  That means you shouldn’t pursue things that they really don’t need.

You may have to occasionally prune older unrelevant content from the membership site.

You should also consider using surveys to determine what your present (and even potential) customers want to see added.  That will help you be as efficient as possible with your time when adding on to your website.

Be mindful that you don’t overwhelm your members with too much new stuff going on.  Try your best to introduce things one a time.  You can even create a release schedule if that helps you get organized.

Tip #6 On How To Build A Membership Website: Don’t Wait to Figure It Out

How to Build a Membership WebsiteFor a long time I knew about how to build a membership website, the advantages, and loved the idea of monthly income….

But I kept putting it off.

I came up with excuses like:

  • I didn’t think I was good enough.
  • I didn’t think it was worth my time.
  • I thought I didn’t have enough to offer.

That was until I finally made a commitment to myself.  I realized that I would NEVER be completely ready.  And that I could always learn and tweak as I went.

That’s why my very first product was dirt cheap: only $7.  It would help me get started, build up traffic and buyer leads, and I would have something to build on.

Tip #7 On How To Build A Membership Website: Get Started

So if you are ready to get started but you don’t really know how to build a membership website from scratch… don’t worry.  I actually found a cool system that already has the foundation built for you, is self hosted, and is actually much cheaper than if you built and hosted the site yourself.

You can check out the details of this marketing and branding platform by clicking here.

So there should be now excuse for not starting today.  Building a membership website has never been easier.

Final Thoughts

If you want to monetize your effort and build your own brand, then you need to use these tips on how to build a membership website.  If you are thinking about building one, what’s holding you back?

It’s not as difficult as you may think.  If you are looking for what we are using for our membership site then check out this branding and marketing platform.  It will have everything you need to build your future online.
