I bet you have been asking yourself the question, “how do I get more clients?”

It’s a common question I get a lot from consultants and coaches.  That’s because clients are the lifeblood of any consulting and coaching business.

Yet many consultants and coaches struggle to get clients… So how can you get clients for your business?

Today I’m going to help you.  I’m going to share with you my top 31 tips on how to get more clients that you can start applying to your business today!

How To Get More Clients For Your Consulting Business

So let’s get started and dive right in.  By the way, you can download a pdf version of this blog post by clicking here.

1. Brand Yourself On Social Media

I’m sure you have some sort of social media presence, and if you haven’t started yet they get started now!

That being said you need to make sure you first understand what message you want to portray to your social media.  And then take that message and ramp it up!  Make sure your audience knows you are the authority for XYZ on your social media platforms.  To make some “filler” posts, I suggest doing some picture quotes (where you have a quote pertinent to your niche on a nice relevant picture).

Be sure to present yourself on the key social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.

By the way, if you have blog posts make sure you syndicate them by posting them on social media!

2. Generate Leads

Generating leads is an important aspect of finding prospective clients.  So you it’s important to come up with a plan to reach them.

I’ve talked about how to use capture pages to get leads in my blog post, The Key Tips To How To Make A Lead Capture Page.  Capture pages are a great way to help you generate leads.

Then you drive traffic to these capture pages. What happens after the capture page is part of your marketing funnel…

3. Build A Marketing Funnel

If you want to know to get more clients, then “marketing funnel” is something you really need to learn about.

The capture page is the first step of your “marketing funnel”.  Your marketing funnel can be as simple as the following steps:

  1. Capture page,
  2. Thank you/sales page
  3. Follow up email series

But I recommend marketing funnels that are a lot more involved when you are promoting consulting or coaching services.  You’re probably promoting a service worth hundreds if not thousands of dollars in value, and that is not a decision you clients will often make spontaneously.  The marketing funnel helps to both educate and build trust in you.

4. Run Ad Campaigns

Now that you have the capture page and funnel in place, it’s time to start running ads.  I love Facebook ads for scaling my business, but you can also use Twitter or Instagram if you don’t have the budget to run an effective Facebook ad campaign.

Be sure to properly plan out your ad campaign using a Facebook Ad Grid before you run your Facebook Ads.  The most effective Facebook marketing campaign puts substantial thought into your marketing hooks.

5. Ask For Referrals

This may seem like the most obvious way to get more clients… but it really isn’t to most.  In fact, for the first six months of consulting I actually forgot to ask for referrals.

Don’t wait for referrals to just fall into your lap.  I suggest right NOW go ahead and send some emails out to present (happy) clients ask for two referrals.  Be sure to keep the email short.  Here’s an example:

Hey {name},

How are things going?  I really enjoyed working with you on your project.  How’s it going now?

By the way, I’m looking for new clients to work with.  

Can you connect me with at least two people in your network that can use my services right now?

6. Partner With Agencies

Partnering with an agency is a great if you are looking for how to get more clients.  I’ve used this strategy several times to help build up my client base, and experience in a niche.

I found agencies usually pass on work because:

  • The budget is too low,
  • It doesn’t fit their particular niche,
  • They don’t have available resources,
  • They don’t have the available skills or expertise.

Normally when an agency turns down a potential client they refer the client to someone in their network.  That’s where you come in.

I recommend emailing a dozen or so agencies with a personalized email to partner or to take up any work they pass up on.  You may get responses from half, and then you can setup phone calls to work out details.

7. Start BloggingKey Tips On How to Get More Clients FAST

Let’s face it… blogging is an amazing way to build relationships with your potential and present clients.  My personal blog gets TONS of traffic every day.

Now you won’t get your blog to suddenly start driving traffic to your business… it takes time.  I had a mentor years ago point out to me that it takes 400-700 blog posts before a blog really starts working for you organically (through Google search, etc).  That’s right… I’m not going to sugar coat anything.  That’s a LOT of work.  But it starts with one simple blog post… and then another… and another… and before you know it.

Blog’s are also great to help convert traffic into sales.  They help build up trust in your skills as you demonstrate you are an authority in your niche.

Don’t delay… the blog will end up being your most valuable resource if you plan in being in business long term.

 

8. Guest Blog

Now while I said that it takes a ton of blogs to really get your blog profitable, you can actually speed that process up by guest blogging.  Guest blogs are a way to borrow traffic from more established blogs and get their readers to learn about your “kung fu”, or in other words you establish yourself as an authority on someone else’s blog.

Find blogs that your prospective clients read, and ask to guest post on them.  You should be able to write about topics that fit the niche of the blog.  And be sure to write something that gives away tons of value.

Alltop is a great place to start finding popular blogs in your industry.

9. Capture Leads

I’m sure you already have a “Contact Us” form on your website… but that’s usually only use by people ready to hire now.  Most of the time potential clients may only browse your website then leave without even contacting you.

That’s why it’s important to give lead magnets like PDF’s or checklists in exchange for their email.  You can later put these leads through the marketing campaign to help convert them into clients.

I recommend Lead Pages to capture leads.

10. Follow Up With “Lost” Clients

Ok… I don’t mean that the clients are actually lost.  LOL

I mean those clients that heard you offer and said “no”.

Don’t give up on those old clients.  I will put them on a follow up campaign on my calendar where I touch bases with them every 1-3 months and see how their project is going.

This tactic is great for showing that you care about the client.  It also helps keep you on their radar in case the opportunity to together opens up again.  I’ve gotten a lot of business using this approach.

11. Network Online and Offline

Don’t just sit behind your computer all week long… plan to go to a meetup or conference, or other places where your prospective clients may be hanging out.  I wished I had started this from day one because not only may you pick up a nugget or two of information, but you can network to find new clients.

You can also network online using platforms like LinkedIn.  Make sure your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date, informative, and include examples of your work.  I recommend sharing your blog posts, website, and anything else that helps promote you.

12. Browse Job Boards

I’m sure you are already using job boards.  You should go ahead and bookmark the following resources.  These boards include design, development, marketing, copywriting, and miscellaneous jobs.  The work ranges from remote, full-time, part-time, contract, consulting, etc… so there’s plenty to choose from.

13. Offer Advice And Help

A long-term strategy to when you are looking for how to get more clients is to offer free strategy sessions.  It can be a great tactic to offer 60-min free strategy sessions where you go over strategies to help them get new business.  You don’t go into the nuts and bolts of the solution (otherwise they’ll feel they can just do things themselves) but instead you go over the overall strategy on how to convert sales.

I’ve used this tactic very effectively to bring in clients into my consulting business.  Although this strategy takes time (to meet the clients either online or offline) it serves as a great way to generate new business.

14. Have An SEO StrategyKey Tips On How to Get More Clients FAST - seo

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a great long term strategy to get targeted traffic to your company website.

Now you won’t get results overnight, but when you combine SEO with blogging (see above) you’ll be creating a sound long term strategy to get more paying clients.

15. Follow Up With Your Network

Browse through old email conversations with colleagues, connections, and people you’ve spoken with in the past that could be a fit for your consultancy.  Follow up with them by asking what they’ve been up to and how you can help.

Asking how you can help lowers resistance of someone versus asking if they would like to hire you for your services.  It helps build up relationships.  Plus if you go out of the way to help someone for free, they’ll likely return the favor and help you.

You can then ask them to give you two people they believe would benefit from your services.

16. Write an eBook

You can write an eBook solving a problem of your target audience.  You can then either give it away for free (to give away if they give their email to you in a capture page) or sell it on your website.

17. Use Twitter Search

Twitter search is a great way to find real-time tweets from people and companies that may be looking to hire you or need your help.  You can find these tweets using certain keywords and phrases such as:

Hiring a {your keyword here}

Looking for a {your keyword here}

Looking to hire a {your keyword here}

You never know what you can find.  It’s worth checking out.

18. Create A Course

You can always create a course on Udemy.  It will help you tap into a large audience of students and prospective clients.

19. Start Coworking

If you work from home, you may want to consider coworking at least once a week.

Coworking spaces are great for meeting similar-minded individuals.  You can then work your way further into your local community of professionals.

You’ll build up strong relationships, and be a go-to consultant for people at the coworking space.  You can also attend the meetings and events that the coworking space may host.

You can find coworking spaces by Googling “coworking + your zip code”.

20. Send A Handwritten LetterKey Tips On How to Get More Clients FAST

If you are looking to land a new client, nothing gets their attention more than a handwritten letter.

Find the person who is most likely to hire you.  Write and send a letter that focuses on solving their problems.

This strategy is also great for following up after meeting prospective clients.  The letter ads a nice touch.

21. Get Press

I love using press releases to help get the message about services, and to let people in the industry know about any major announcements you may have.  There are several press release services.  It’s also a service I offer my clients.

22. Be Extremely Personal

If you’re replying to a job ad, or cold emailing, or cold Facebook or Skype messaging, then its a good idea to be personal and stand out from the competition.

Make EVERYTHING super personal.

When you sound like you are writing and messaging that person exclusively, and you’ve taken the time to learn things about them, you’ll be amazed how that personal touch will help you close more deals.  You’ll certainly stand out from the pack.

23. Make Creative Business Cards

Business cards can be a very effective marketing tool… if done right.

Remember that your business card is your first “billboard” or “ad” that most people will see from you.  Make sure that it is easy to read, stand out, and looks of quality.

I was just reading that according to Psychology Today, “Behavior is said to be self-sabotaging when it creates problems and interferes with long-standing goals.” Now the challenge is… most people are unaware that they are sabotaging themselves.

The following are tips ways to help you get out of your own way and stop sobataging your success:

1. Stop Procrastinating.

Really, the best way to get’er done is to stop procrastinating.  Act on your great ideas.  You aren’t doing yourself or your business any good by sitting on the idea. Make it happen.

2. Make A To-Do List

The problem is that most entrepreneurs are caught up with distractions.  They are always reacting to requests.

An easy solution is to plan your days out the night or week before…. create a “to do” list.  Then when you wake up stick to that plan.  If urgent things up come, write them down and then right them down beside your list for the day.  If they are more urgent… do them.  If not then put them off until later.

3. Stop Over-Analyzing

Too many people get stuck because paralysis by analysis.  You will never know EVERYTHING before you get started.  Take action today and you can figure out the details as you get things in motion.

4. Recognize Your Weaknesses

Sure you can try to do everything… but sometimes its better to find people to do it better than you can.

For instance, do you really want your website to look like it was slapped together by a novice?  Do you really need to create all the graphics yourself?  Do you need to do all your marketing as well?

Chances are you aren’t you can’t be really good at everything, and worse you’re putting off key business-generating activities to get things done others can do for you (and better).  Get someone else to do them and free up your time…. the sooner you do this the better your chance of success.

5. Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone

You’ll never get anything spectacular in your life unless you’re willing to step outside your comfort zone.  Sure you’ll have to face difficulties, but those ultimately really just take patience.  Through perseverance and endurance you can continue to reach your goals and dreams.

6. Find A Support Network

No matter if you’re just getting started, or if you have been building your business for a while, it helps to build a support network.  It helps to get out of your business and start networking and supporting other business owners.  Form a mastermind where the members benefit from each others knowledge and experience.  Having people support you is a great way to prevent yourself from sabotaging yourself.

7. Delegate And Outsource

A successful business includes product/service development, sales, customer service, marketing, PR, bookkeeping, etc. That’s a lot of work and it can be overwhelming for one person.  It helps to be able to hire others, even consultants, to help take over certain aspects of your business.  That way you can focus on the bigger picture of your business.

This is why a lot of people apply to work with me to help them marketing their business using the internet.  I help them focus on what they do best by doing what I do best with internet marketing.

The true recipe for success is when you focus on helping people… and become very good at helping others.

Get Good At Helping Others

When you help others you in essence you demonstrate that you are of value to other people.  That’s why focusing on helping others is so important.  You demonstrate your “usefulness” to society.

And when you get really good at helping people… making yourself known for what you do… you in essence make yourself irreplaceable and people realize that they can’t make do without you.

This philosophy is applicable to really anything in life.  But it’s really important when you have your own business.

That’s why for example I give away free strategy sessions for people looking to become a client.  These strategy sessions demonstrate value to the prospect and from there they can see if there is a good fit.  I also write a lot of blog posts and shoot videos like this one… demonstrating the value I can bring to someone and their business.

Demonstration As The Authority

When you consistently give away value to help people, you demonstrate value to them in what they are doing.  You show yourself as the authority in a particular niche.  And as you demonstrate yourself as the authority with the thought of helping people (with no intention of getting anything in return) then you’ll find that you also build trust in your potential clients.

The combination of trust and authority is key when attracting any new business.  And the coolest part is that once you start helping people the content you create, and the help you do, will be out there forever for others to witness.  That means you will exponentially build up your business by giving a bit each day.

It can be tough to be successful when you don’t like your work.  It holds you back from being truly successful.

It took me a while to find what I love to do… and when I finally got on track success followed.  That’s why I want to talk today about the importance of “do what you love“.

It’s important that you find and do what you love to do.  That’s why I want to talk about how to find what you love to do.

 

The following are 4 ways to find what you love to do:

1. Quit When You Find Out It’s Not Working

A lot of people hate their jobs.  They know they don’t want to stay, but they stay anyway because they don’t know what they want to do.  This thinking is flawed because you won’t learn or discover what your ideal career by sitting around thinking about it.  If you don’t like your situation… you need to find something else.

When you leave even without knowing what you do next is that you start figuring it out URGENTLY.  The urgency is uncomfortable… but can be extremely powerful because it frees you up to invest all your energy into finding the right thing.

2. Follow Your Curiosity

Even though you may not have a clear vision for your future career, you are probably curious about things that may not be apparent right now.  It’s very important to follow your curiosity… to uncover your less obvious interests.

The reason is that it’s important to tap into your unique interests and motivations that separate you from others.  Pursuing them sets you on a path of unlocking your true YOU.

A good way to help you find yourself is ask yourself: “what would you do if you had a billion dollars?”  Maybe you have an interest that you perceived that couldn’t be monetized… or maybe you are afraid of what others would think.  Yet if you are genuinely passionate about it you will find a way to be successful.

3. Don’t Focus On The Money

When you focus first on making the money, you’ll start making mistakes.  Instead focus on what you love to do, and treat the financial concerns as secondary.  If the practicality of what you do and how much money you earn are your primary criteria you will instantly limit your options… that is what I originally did when I chose engineering years ago.  Instead I started looking back at my love of writing, and working with people… and it led me down the path to being a consultant.

If you focus on the money first you’ll do what’s predictable and getting to do what you love will be tough. On the other hand, if you allow yourself to pursue your curiosity, you will find yourself in the position of power and, eventually, in the position to earn money on your terms.

When you focus on what you love to do, you give yourself the power to choose your profession.  When you do what you love, you express yourself through it and you become very proficient at it.

4. Don’t Create Artificial Limitations

How far you go in your profession is set by you.

Don’t set limits for yourself, instead allow yourself to become the best you.  The best at what you can do.  Titles and positions will only create artificial limits on your ability to expand and reach your potential.

It’s very important to find and do what you love.  When you figure it out, using the guidelines that I’ve outlined today, you have the ability to be the best and most successful you.  Here’s to your prosperity!

It’s not the big “wins” that cause you to stretch yourself but those things that happen to you that feel like failure that are your greatest times of growth.

Pain gets our attention like nothing else.

When we win we tend to pat ourselves on the back and coast but when we feel the sting of defeat or rejection it’s the best time to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps and assess what went wrong, take responsibility and work hard to change anything that needs changing.

This is a huge opportunity and all it takes is the right mental attitude.

It’s Like A Workout

It’s kind of like bodybuilding.

When we want to get more tone or build stronger muscles we go to the gym and we work out. We lift heavier and heavier weights which causes some “damage” to the muscle fibers.

After your workout, your body repairs or replaces those damaged muscle fibers by fusing them together to form new and stronger muscle fibers that are increased in thickness and stronger.

Without the stress of the damaged fibers there would not be new tissue growth.

Adversity

It’s the same with adversity If we were constantly on a smooth and easy path we don’t have the incentive for growth we coast.

It’s the “damage” of failure or loss that gets our attention enough to make changes.

There are countless examples of successful people who have achieved their success not in spite of their challenges but because of them.

  • Bill gates first business failed.
  • Albert Einstein didn’t speak until he was four.
  • Jim Carey was homeless.
  • Steven Spielberg was rejected three times from film school.

All of these people didn’t allow failure to define them but used it as a springboard for great success.

Like building a muscle we are given as much success as we can handle by building strong tools to help us deal with the challenges that will come with success. Without these tools, we would not be able to handle all of the pressures of the degree of success we are intending.

Rejection or Failure Don’t Define You

Growth and change can be one of the hardest things you do in life. You have to decide it’s what you want and persevere.

Many are but few are called but few are chosen.

Don’t Give In To Fear

If you’re going through a challenge you will be afraid at times. Acknowledge it and greet it like a friend.

But then realize that you have a greatness inside you that is bigger and more powerful than any fear. Realize you are not alone and you wouldn’t be given these challenges if you were not equipped to handle them.

Move forward taking one step at a time and try not to think or plan too far out into the future. You will be helped and guided but it comes in the present moment. In times of panic, I find I want to overplan and feel more secure. It’s times like this when it seems counterintuitive to let go and surrender to what is happening.

Let go of the reins and realize you can only plan so far because each next step is dependent on the last one and in order to make the right decision you need to be in the present moment.

Your Support System

Have a great support system or mentor to help you through the rough spots. It should be someone who is knowledgeable and supportive. Be very selective about who you share things with.

Final Thoughts on the Path to Success

Be confident in your journey.

This will be a part of your amazing story and an inspiration to others.

There will be people in your life that will need to know how to overcome adversity to achieve the same level of success that you have now.

You will be an inspiration and a counselor to others in need.

Every time you overcome something difficult you develop the mental muscles and tools so that the next challenge is easier.

You were not called to live a life of ease but a life of greatness and inspiration to others and Its not always easy but it will definitely be worth it.

Now of course, the definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results.”  That’s why its important to adjust things if they are not getting the desired results.

But that does not mean quitting.

So get a goal firmly in your mind.

And pursue it.

If you come across obstacles, then find a way over, around, or through them…. just don’t quit.

Remember, your success is up to you.  Keep at things until you succeed.  The path to your success may not what you envisioned initially, so be prepared to adjust course.  But you will end up there inevitably as long as you don’t quit.

There are three categories of tasks you need to complete to successfully build an online business:

  1. Create Content
  2. Market That Content
  3. Self Development and Learning

And you need to focus your daily activities roughly equally within these three categories.

Create Content

Create content that your audience will appreciate.  The types of content include educational, entertaining, or news.

The content will be something your audience will appreciate, and will use to improve their own life experience.  When you create content like blog posts and videos, this content is evergreen… meaning that it will always be out there working for you.  This will help people learn more about you, and look for other work that you have done.

The idea is that content, like this blog post, will expose your audience to different ways they will ultimately give you their email.

That takes us to the next category.

Market That Content

If you create content, there is no guarantee that it will be seen.  That’s why you need to market that content.

You can market that content in a variety of ways, including (but not limited to):

The whole idea is to spread the word out there about the content after you created it.

Self Development and Learning

You can create content and market it, but you will fall short in your success if you don’t continually try to learn new marketing strategies and techniques, and if you don’t work on your self development.

Now it may seem relatively easy to understand why you need to work on new marketing strategies (to become a more efficient and effective marketer), but it is often not apparent when you need to work on self development.  But it is important to do self development because it helps you:

  • Become more focused when working on your business
  • Helps you have the mental fortitude to overcome challenges when things do go wrong (not a matter of if, but when)
  • You become a better leader and build confidence

Therefore be sure to keep working on your self development.  The following books can help you with self development:

Are you looking to learn how to create a business plan?

When you have a business, having a solid business plan can literally help your business succeed.  We had some initial success with our online business, but things really took off once we learned how to create a business plan and applied it ourselves.

That’s why I want to help you and show you how to create a business plan for your own business.

How to Create a Business Plan and Mission Statement

When starting a business it’s prudent to have a business plan. It’s like a roadmap for your success. It’s like an outline a company intends to take to grow their business.

Start with The Mission Statement

Within this plan is a mission statement.

A sentence or two that defines the company’s goals, ethics, and culture.- the what and who of the company.

This can be a powerful tool or meaningless hype depending on your intent.

Some people consider it something to quickly get done and check off the list of things to do. However, a well-written mission statement can be a great tool for clarity and communication of your business goals. Not only for yourself and employees but customers and the community.

It’s like a written vision board for everyone to see.

Example Mission Statements

Here are a few examples of some of the best mission statements:

Amazon-To be Earth’s most customer-centric company where people can find and discover anything they want to buy online.”

Virgin-Our mission statement is simple, yet the foundation of everything we do here at Virgin Atlantic Airways… to embrace the human spirit and let it fly.”

Trader Joe’s-The mission of Trader Joe’s is to give our customers the best food and beverage values that they can find anywhere and to provide them with the information required to make informed buying decisions. We provide these with a dedication to the highest quality of customer satisfaction delivered with a sense of warmth, friendliness, fun, individual pride, and company spirit.”

Intel: Delight our customers, employees, and shareholders by relentlessly delivering the platform and technology advancements that become essential to the way we work and live.

All of these mission statements are short, memorable and we know why they are in business.

Take Your Time

Give yourself some time to write it. It should be clear and concise. Even though it will end up being a couple of sentences long you’re going to need to brainstorm and edit several times.

 

These Questions May Help

  • Start out with the following questions:
  • Why did we start this business?
  • Why are you in business?
  • What do you want to accomplish?
  • • Why will this bring value to people?
  • Who is your customer? Get very clear on who this is. In this video Mike, talks about how to define your target audience

Advice from Richard Branson

Now take some advice from Richard Branson on crafting your mission statement

  • Brevity is certainly key, so try using Twitter’s 140-character template when you’re drafting your inspirational message.
  • You need to explain your company’s purpose-
  • outline expectations for internal and external clients alike.
  • Make it unique to your company
  • Make it memorable
  • Keep it real
  • Just for fun, imagine it on the bottom of a coat of arms.”

How to Create a Business Plan and Mission Statement

Here is my challenge to you if you haven’t written a mission statement yet write one that reflects your true passions and values, using the guidelines above write on that reflects the difference your business will make in the world.
